LaLiga Enhances Coaching with Sportian Performance PlatformLaLiga Enhances Coaching with Sportian Performance Platform

In its ongoing quest for improvement and increased competitiveness, LaLiga has introduced a platform designed for clubs, specifically aiding their coaching staff in analyzing physical, tactical, and positional performance data in real-time, as well as during match preparations. LaLiga has expanded access to this platform—now known as Sportian Performance—not only to current coaching staff but also to unemployed coaches.

Recently, around twenty elite coaches without current positions participated in a training session at LaLiga’s headquarters to refresh their knowledge of this tool, which they previously utilized in their past roles within the league. They were also introduced to the latest updates, methodologies, and technologies employed in the competition. This initiative falls under the Football Intelligence & Performance department of LaLiga and is conducted in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and its Coaches Committee.

The intensive four-hour training session attracted notable figures such as Robert Moreno, Diego Martínez, Alejandro Menéndez, and Quique Setién among others.

According to Ricardo Resta, director of the Football Intelligence & Performance department at LaLiga, the goal is to ensure that coaches who typically occupy positions in the top tiers are as prepared as possible when they receive offers from clubs. This creates a win-win situation for both coaching staff and clubs, as the latter can hire coaches who are already familiar with the latest technological updates and trends in LaLiga. “For the coaches, it’s about being well-prepared, updated with tools and technology, and in optimal condition for when they step into a managerial role. From LaLiga’s and the clubs’ perspective, when hiring a coach, they want someone ready to deliver maximum performance from day one. It’s a clear synergy,” Resta explains.

Fran Escribá, one of the participants, expressed that he has always been keen on updates and appreciates having a tool like Mediacoach available, especially when out of work. He highlights the difficulty coaches face in finding time for professional development while actively managing a team.

When asked about the most requested features of the Sportian Performance platform, Resta noted that while coaches generally seek everything, they particularly value the tactical camera view, which provides a distinctive perspective compared to traditional television productions. This feature allows for detailed observations of team movements and evolution during matches. Coaches select data based on teams they believe may be future candidates, effectively mapping out potential opportunities as they prepare.

An interesting discussion arose regarding generational differences in attitudes toward data. Resta noted, “You’d be surprised by age-related habits. We’ve moved into an era where no one doubts the utility of data. The context has shifted such that data, when well-analyzed, serves as a significant aid in validating one’s instincts.” He emphasized that while data is crucial, the irreplaceable value of a coach’s experience remains paramount.

Escribá echoed this sentiment, acknowledging that while some colleagues might struggle with technology, most recognize its benefits. He recalled instances of coaches who previously lacked even basic technology, underscoring the varying degrees of technology adoption among professionals.

Another question posed was how data access has transformed the coaching profession. Escribá noted significant changes over the past two decades, emphasizing the drastic increase in available data. “Twenty years ago, obtaining team data was challenging. Now, the plethora of information available has revolutionized coaching approaches. The reliance has shifted from merely a coach’s perspective to a data-driven approach, facilitated by tactical cameras and advanced analytics,” he stated.

Sportian Performance stands as a point of pride for LaLiga, with Andoni Iraola, now coaching Bournemouth, reflecting on his longing for the features of Mediacoach, which are non-existent in the Premier League. Escribá shared similar sentiments, stating that the evolution of data capabilities has created a tool that clubs should be proud of, enhancing their ability to analyze matches comprehensively.

The platform is utilized not only for match preparation but also for real-time adjustments during games, especially at halftime, where precise instructions are crucial. Resta mentioned the introduction of additional monitors for coaching staff to consult during matches, enhancing their analytical capabilities.

Albert Celades emphasized the power of the program, noting its efficiency in analyzing game situations. “If used effectively, it optimizes search and analysis time significantly,” he explained, praising LaLiga’s commitment to providing top-tier analytical tools.

Resta reciprocated the praise, highlighting the exceptional quality of LaLiga coaches on an international level, attributing it to a collective tactical acumen that stands out globally.

The rebranding from Mediacoach to Sportian reflects LaLiga’s aim to encapsulate its expertise in football and technology. Resta stated, “LaLiga sought a name that accurately reflects our longstanding identity as a team of football experts, aiming to enhance clubs’ use of tools and data.”

The platform also supports various internal functions within LaLiga, providing insights to audiovisual production teams and commentators, thereby enriching the overall broadcasting experience.

In conclusion, this innovative tool is a source of pride for LaLiga, now also benefiting unemployed coaches—many of whom will undoubtedly find positions in upcoming seasons. Every detail is vital in maintaining LaLiga’s status as the world’s premier football league.
