Lazio suffered a 2-0 defeat against Inter, with Lautaro Martinez and Ange-Yoan Bonny scoring in each half, handing a disappointing loss to the visitors. Coach Maurizio Sarri expressed his frustration over Martinez’s challenge on his player, Mattia Zaccagni, resulting in a yellow card for Sarri himself. Zaccagni was forced to leave the pitch, raising Sarri’s concerns about the possibility of conceding a goal in that moment.

Sarri criticized the officiating in Serie A, deeming it subpar. He stated after the match: “Why did I get angry? For one simple reason: Lautaro’s foul on Zaccagni deserved a yellow card. Had it been issued, Zaccagni wouldn’t have had to leave the pitch. Not only did he not receive a yellow card, but Zaccagni’s exit almost led to a goal against us. Even Padre Pio would have had a reason to be angry.”

Instead of penalizing the Argentine forward, the referee booked Sarri for his vocal frustration regarding the incident. “There are no referees up to the task, including tonight’s. I hope Serie A can seek the help of foreign referees; they need to be ‘rented’ from abroad,” he remarked.

Sarri acknowledged Inter’s superiority on the pitch and refrained from blaming the officials for the defeat, stating: “The referee didn’t influence the result. Inter played better than us and would have won regardless of the officiating. Conceding a goal within the first two minutes at San Siro makes it challenging. Despite initial difficulties, we composed ourselves and had several opportunities. It wasn’t a disastrous match. It’s frustrating that both goals came from simple turnovers: the first near the box and the second immediately after we regained possession. Such errors often favor the more technical team, leaving a bitter taste. However, the overall performance was decent.”

“We pay for the technical gap; we’ll see how much we can narrow it.” He noted the absence of a traditional striker in the squad, pointing out that their forwards possess different characteristics. “The only one who fits the role well is Castellanos. The rest play differently. Currently, we are suffering in the attacking area, yet we still managed two or three scoring opportunities at San Siro, which is not an easy feat.”

Lazio currently occupies the ninth position in the Serie A standings, with four wins and three draws from 11 matches. The defeat against Inter marked their first loss since September, following a setback against Roma. With no European competitions this season, Lazio is focused solely on Serie A, striving to utilize this season to secure a return to European football. They will resume action on November 23 against Lecce, followed by matches against Milan in both the domestic league and the Coppa Italia on November 29 and December 4, respectively.

Sarri expressed hope for squad enhancement during the January transfer window, stating: “They haven’t informed me yet whether the transfer market is open. I believe it is, but I am awaiting the official announcement before we make any necessary decisions.”
