In an exclusive interview with DFB.de, Lennart Karl, the 17-year-old debutant for the Germany U21 team, addressed various topics including his nomination, his transition from the U17s to the U21s, and his playing style.

Karl, who is also a member of Bayern Munich’s Club World Cup squad, impressed coach Vincent Kompany during training and showcased his talents in a 45-minute match against Auckland City, leading to his promotion to the first team.

With three goal contributions (two goals and one assist) in 12 appearances across all competitions, Karl earned a call-up to Antonio Di Salvo’s U21 squad.

Regarding his nomination, Karl shared, “I was at the doctor’s office for a routine check-up when Antonio Di Salvo called me. I initially missed the call, but later received a message from the head coach asking me to return his call. Upon doing so, he informed me that I had earned my nomination for the upcoming U21 international matches based on my performances at Bayern Munich.”

Transitioning from the U17s to the U21s is not entirely new for Karl, who expressed his comfort within the squad: “I feel very welcome here, as I already know a few of the guys well, including Tom Bischof, Noel Aseko, and Arijon Ibrahimović. The situation mirrors my experience at my club, where I also advanced to the first team earlier than expected. Everything fits perfectly.”

Karl articulated his aspirations with the U21 team: “I want to integrate well into the team, showcase my strengths, and work on my weaknesses. My primary goal is to earn ample playing time, which I will have to strive for. Even as a younger player, I expect to contribute from the outset.”

Demonstrating his footballing acumen, Karl described himself as a player with considerable speed and acceleration: “I tend to cut inside, and I’m not intimidated by my opponents, regardless of their age. While I respect all my adversaries, I aim to play my natural game, as it best highlights my abilities. However, I recognize the need to improve my first touch with my right foot, which I am focusing on.”

Throughout his brief career at Bayern Munich, Karl has learned extensively from world-class players: “I have gained significant insights from my attacking teammates, particularly regarding the movement patterns of Michael Olise and Luis Díaz. It’s essential to observe them while also emphasizing my individual strengths. Working with a coach like Vincent Kompany enhances my development daily. Initially, I was quite reserved within the team, but I’ve become more comfortable engaging with my teammates off the pitch.”
