Liam Rosenior made the decision not to oversee Chelsea’s Premier League match against Fulham on Wednesday, citing the “difficult time-frame” of his appointment just one day prior to the game at Craven Cottage.

Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat, with Fulham’s Raúl Jiménez and Harry Wilson finding the net, while Blues defender Marc Cucurella was sent off in the 22nd minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Rosenior, 41, recently signed a six-year contract as Chelsea’s head coach after leaving the club’s Ligue 1 affiliate, Strasbourg, to succeed Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge. Although he traveled with the team from Chelsea to Fulham, he felt there was insufficient time to adequately prepare the players for him to take charge.

As a result, Rosenior chose to observe from the stands alongside co-owner Behdad Eghbali, while interim coach Calum McFarlane managed the team, having previously led them to a 1-1 draw against Manchester City.

“Travel, but mainly the fact that Calum [McFarlane] did such an incredible job against Manchester City,” Rosenior explained to Sky Sports. “I thought the players’ performance, particularly in the second half, showcased great energy, intensity, and quality.

“Not only Calum but also Harry [Hudson] have supported the lads remarkably during this challenging time. I arrived from Strasbourg yesterday morning, so the tight schedule made it difficult for me to implement the tactical work required to prepare the team for success.

“I have full faith in Calum and the players to secure a victory tonight.”

Following the match, McFarlane commended Rosenior for his approach to the pre-game preparations, given the limited time he had to integrate himself into the team’s dynamics.

“He watched training and we had a conversation afterward, but because of his late arrival, he entrusted the preparation to us,” McFarlane stated to reporters. “He allowed us the freedom to select the team and set the tactics, demonstrating respect and trust in our capabilities before he takes over training tomorrow.”

Rosenior will lead first-team training on Thursday and is set to make his coaching debut during the FA Cup third round match against EFL Championship side Charlton on Saturday.

“I am super excited and can’t wait,” Rosenior expressed prior to the Fulham game. “Coaching has always been my aspiration, and this opportunity at this stage in my career is tremendous. However, my primary focus is not just on being Chelsea’s manager but on becoming a successful Chelsea manager. This was the message I conveyed to the players when I met them for the first time.

“We need to start strong as we move forward this season.”
