Lisandro Martínez has openly challenged Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt to voice their criticisms directly to him after they claimed that Erling Haaland would make the Manchester United defender appear like “a little toddler” in the Manchester derby.

In a podcast discussion prior to the match, Butt suggested that Haaland would easily overpower Martínez, likening their potential clash to a father carrying a child down the street after school. Scholes added that Haaland would likely score and then “throw him in the net.”

However, following Martínez’s commendable performance in United’s 2-0 victory, where he successfully contained Haaland, the Argentinian responded to their remarks—especially targeting Scholes.

“Honestly, he can say whatever he wants,” Martínez stated. “I’ve already told him, if he wants to speak to me, he can come to my house or wherever. It doesn’t bother me.”

In response, Scholes took to Instagram to comment: “Someone’s had a good game, was really happy for you… Tea, no sugar please @lisandromartinezzz.”

Manchester United is reportedly displeased with the comments made by Scholes and Butt on their podcast, viewing them as mocking rather than constructive analysis. Both former players were seen at Old Trafford recently, attending United’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton, which Martínez also played in.

Martínez remarked, “I respect the involvement of former players who genuinely want to assist the club. However, when they are here in person, no one addresses you directly. So, I don’t really care about their comments. My priority is my performance, the team’s performance, and giving my all to this club until my last day.”

Martínez’s strong display against Haaland—who was substituted early by Pep Guardiola—was pivotal for United, as Michael Carrick secured a victory in his debut match as head coach.

Carrick, appointed just days prior, quickly made an impact on the squad, with Martínez noting, “It’s a completely different atmosphere. He understands the significance of this club. He delivered a message that he has been part of this place for a long time. He has achieved everything and wants to contribute to the club, especially in this challenging situation. It was the right moment for a change.”
