The Athletic reports that Liverpool is making efforts to sign Lutsharel Geertruida, a defender from RB Leipzig, on loan for the remainder of the current season.

The Dutch defender, who is presently on loan at Sunderland in the Premier League, has become a target for Liverpool due to their limited defensive options. The club is actively searching for a player who can enhance their defensive lineup.

According to Sky Germany, RB Leipzig is expected to approve Geertruida’s temporary transfer to Liverpool. However, the reigning Premier League champions will need to negotiate an agreement with Sunderland to take over his loan arrangement.

The 25-year-old has appeared in 17 matches for Sunderland this season since his loan move from Leipzig last summer, but he has struggled to secure a regular starting position.

Geertruida faced challenges during his single season at Leipzig, which coincided with the club’s overall difficulties, culminating in their worst-ever Bundesliga finish last season.

Known for his versatility, Geertruida can play as a right-back, centre-back, or defensive midfielder, addressing the current gaps in Liverpool’s squad. While at Leipzig, he primarily played as a centre-back and right-back, and he also made two appearances as a left-back.
