Liverpool Questions VAR Decision on Van Dijk s Disallowed GoalLiverpool Questions VAR Decision on Van Dijk s Disallowed Goal

Liverpool FC has engaged with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to voice their concerns over the controversial decision to disallow Virgil van Dijk’s goal in the recent 3-0 defeat against Manchester City.

During the match, with City leading 1-0, Van Dijk scored with a header that was subsequently ruled out after a Video Assistant Review (VAR). The VAR concluded that Andrew Robertson was in an offside position, as he was positioned in front of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and deemed to have made an apparent action by ducking in front of the Italian.

However, Liverpool does not concur with this ruling. The club argues that the criteria for disallowing the goal, as stated in the laws of the game, were not met by referee Chris Kavanagh. Following a thorough review of the footage from various angles, Liverpool disputes the assertion that Robertson’s position interfered with Donnarumma’s line of sight.

Furthermore, the club is perplexed as to why the VAR process, overseen by Michael Oliver, did not result in the goal being awarded. Although Liverpool accepts the final outcome of the match, they felt compelled to reach out to Howard Webb, the head of PGMOL, to ensure that this incident is not overlooked and is subject to further scrutiny.

According to the relevant stipulations of Law 11 regarding offside, a player in an offside position is penalized only if they become active by interfering with play or obstructing an opponent’s ability to play the ball. Liverpool believes that the decision to disallow Van Dijk’s goal fails to align with these established guidelines.
