omidbasir- Earlier this year, there was considerable relief when captain Virgil van Dijk signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool. However, Arne Slot’s squad is currently lacking in centre-back options. Ibrahima Konate has yet to finalize a new deal, with his current contract set to expire in 2026 amid speculation linking him to Real Madrid. In mid-August, Liverpool invested approximately £30 million ($41 million) in teenage Parma talent Leoni, aiming to cultivate him as a future star.

This season was intended to focus on integrating the young player into the squad and providing him with game time, while he would serve as a backup to Van Dijk and Konate. Unfortunately, just over a month after joining Anfield, the Italy Under-19 international sustained a severe injury in a Carabao Cup match against Southampton, leaving Liverpool somewhat short in their defensive lineup.

Following the injury in late September, Slot remarked, “He is not in a good place, of course, because he tore his ACL and it means he will be out for a year. Being so young and coming to a new country, playing so well in your first game… it’s very difficult to see the positive side. There’s rarely a bright side, but one can still find comfort in the fact that he is young and has many years ahead after recovering from such a grave injury.”

The failure to secure Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi seems to be a growing concern for the team. In October, Liverpool was linked with 25-year-old Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck, seen as a potential replacement for Konate should he decide to leave. The German international has garnered attention for his impressive performances in the Bundesliga, attracting interest from both the Premier League and La Liga.

However, it appears that Liverpool is not actively pursuing the 6ft 3in defender, who is hesitant to sign a new contract with his current club. Schlotterbeck stated in October, “BVB will be my first point of contact, and then we’ll have to see how the next few months go. It makes a difference whether you’re in 11th place in March or competing in the Champions League. All I can say is: I feel good.”

According to reports from DaveOCKOP, Liverpool is monitoring Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande. Crystal Palace had pursued the 21-year-old extensively over the summer to potentially replace Guehi but halted their efforts once the England international opted to stay. The Eagles reportedly engaged in ‘advanced’ negotiations for a deal worth between £40-50 million ($53-66 million) for the Ivory Coast international, although Liverpool’s interest appears less aggressive. Remarkably, DaveOCKOP indicates that Schlotterbeck remains the more ‘ideal’ option for Slot.

In the interim, Liverpool hopes that Van Dijk and Konate can maintain their fitness, while Joe Gomez serves as a backup should either player be sidelined. Slot’s team invested heavily this summer in high-profile signings such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. However, neglecting to strengthen their defense has proven to be a misstep, especially with goalkeeper Allison also facing injury issues. The reigning Premier League champions find themselves seven points behind league leaders Arsenal after just ten matches. Their next challenge is against a resurgent Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. A loss, combined with an Arsenal victory, could jeopardize their title defense significantly.
