Liverpool s Struggles A Call for Change from Midfielder JonesLiverpool s Struggles A Call for Change from Midfielder Jones

In the aftermath of Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat to PSV on Wednesday, which followed a disappointing 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, midfielder Curtis Jones candidly addressed the team’s alarming decline in performance. The England international described the current results as “unacceptable” and underscored the necessity for collective improvement.

In his comments to RTE, Jones stated, “I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. It’s just unacceptable. I’m past being angry inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the words. It’s difficult because I’m playing for the team I support. I’ve watched this club all my life, and I haven’t seen a Liverpool team endure a stretch like this in a long time. However, we still wear that badge on our chest, and as long as it’s there, we are committed to fighting. We will strive to restore this team to its rightful place and remind everyone why this club is celebrated as the best in the world. But at this moment, we’re struggling, and change is imperative.”

The 24-year-old emphasized that the once-feared atmosphere at Anfield has dissipated. He believes the team has been too accommodating and should adopt a more aggressive approach on the pitch.

Jones elaborated in an interview with CBS, saying, “You want to be assertive out there, tackle fiercely, and play with a fighting spirit. It’s our responsibility to alter this narrative of being too nice. Teams now come here expecting to score multiple goals, which is a far cry from the intimidating environment we used to create. It’s essential that we play with more intensity, especially off the ball. This aspect of our game must evolve.”

Meanwhile, manager Slot appeared visibly disheartened following yet another historic defeat. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed that the club should not terminate Slot’s position, even as the Dutchman begins to question his own effectiveness.

Slot acknowledged, “I’m not questioning the players, as I know we possess exceptional talent. Their mentality after falling behind was what I anticipated, and it’s expected of any Liverpool player. It’s natural to scrutinize your line-ups, tactics, and substitutions when results do not favor you. However, I take full responsibility for this situation. Yet, with the talent at our disposal, this decline cannot persist.”

With nine defeats in their last 12 matches across all competitions, including six losses in their last seven Premier League games, Liverpool will face a confidence challenge as they prepare for a match against West Ham this weekend. The Hammers have shown signs of improvement recently and will be eager to secure another upset. Following this encounter, the Reds will also compete against Sunderland and Leeds United, as a crucial series of matches lie ahead.
