Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), encountered an unexpected incident during the launch of his new book, “Kill Rubiales,” on Thursday. The event took place on Madrid’s Maria de Molina Street.

Rubiales resigned from his position in September 2023 amid widespread outrage over his conduct following Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory. This included an unsolicited kiss on player Jenni Hermoso, for which he was found guilty of sexual assault earlier this year.

During the book launch, an individual threw three eggs at Rubiales while he was being interviewed in front of an audience. Video footage captured the moment, showing Rubiales attempting to confront the perpetrator, who was subsequently escorted out by security personnel.

In a post-incident interview with Radio Marca, Rubiales expressed his shock, saying, “I didn’t know what he had in his hands. I thought he might have a gun… I wasn’t thinking about myself.”

Further reports indicated that a man was detained by police outside the venue after the altercation. Rubiales’ appeal against his sexual assault conviction, which resulted in a fine exceeding €10,000 but acquitted him of coercion charges, was dismissed by Spain’s High Court in June. His lawyer has since announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.
