Álvaro Arbeloa has praised Jude Bellingham for his remarkable leadership and winning mentality following his impressive performance in Real Madrid’s recent 6-1 victory over AS Monaco in the Champions League. Arbeloa believes this result could serve as a turning point in what has been an inconsistent season for the team.

In the match at the Santiago Bernabéu, England midfielder Bellingham scored the sixth goal, celebrating with a gesture aimed at dispelling rumors regarding his professionalism off the field.

Having started his coaching tenure at Madrid under challenging circumstances after being eliminated from the Copa del Rey, Arbeloa has seen his team rebound with victories over Levante and Monaco, and they are set to face Villarreal, currently in third place, on Saturday.

During a press conference on Friday, Arbeloa expressed his views on Bellingham’s contributions this season. “I can only speak about what’s happening now,” he stated. “In the games Jude has played with me—both in matches and training—he has showcased his technical ability, leadership, personality, and character. The effort he put forth in the match against Monaco was exceptional.”

Bellingham, who began the season recovering from shoulder surgery, has since made 16 La Liga appearances for the 2025-26 season, netting four goals and providing three assists, in addition to scoring twice in the Champions League.

“He’s a player with a winning mentality, possessing all the qualities needed to excel at Real Madrid,” Arbeloa remarked. “Considering his youth and potential, I am thrilled with what he brings to the team.”

Arbeloa’s predecessor, Xabi Alonso, departed the club after a defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final, which followed a series of disappointing results prior to Christmas. Nevertheless, Madrid approaches the Villarreal match just one point behind Barcelona at the top of the La Liga standings.

“In the short time I’ve been coach, I want the Monaco game to be a turning point,” Arbeloa said. “We have much to improve upon, but the players are eager to work, which instills confidence in me. I can only speak from my experience since taking over last Tuesday; the players have embraced me and are excited to put in the effort.”

Arbeloa also confirmed that forward Rodrygo would return from injury for the upcoming match and noted he had yet to discuss Vinícius Júnior’s contract situation with him. Júnior was named MVP for the Monaco game after creating three goals and scoring another, although his contract runs until 2027.

While ESPN has reported that Alonso’s departure has alleviated some impediments to contract renewal discussions, a significant financial gap remains. “No, the contract situation is not within my control; it is up to Vinícius and the club,” Arbeloa clarified. “My focus is on maximizing the players’ potential. Naturally, I hope to see Vini continue to make history at Real Madrid.”
