This afternoon, Álvaro Fidalgo was officially presented to the media as the newest player for Real Betis. The 28-year-old midfielder from Asturias joins the club after a successful stint with Club América in Mexico, signing a contract that extends until June 30, 2030.

“These past few days have been a mix of joy and sadness for me; it’s been complicated, but when you leave a place and people express their feelings, it means they cared for you, which is invaluable. Neither América nor I owe anything to each other, yet I left with a heart full of gratitude for everything they gave me,” he remarked.

Fidalgo began his career at Real Madrid’s youth academy, making his first-team debut in the Cup, and played for Castilla before moving to Castellón. He spoke highly of his former teammate Isco, stating, “Isco is someone I’ve admired since I was 18 or 19 years old when I first started training with Real Madrid. It is impossible for me to compare myself with him. We’re talking about one of Spain’s greatest talents, and I believe that’s no revelation. Alongside Modric and Marcelo, Isco is one of the players who has impressed me most during training and matches. Our playing styles are quite different but complementary. It would be a dream to play alongside him again. I debuted when he was on the field, and he had an outstanding performance that day, scoring two or three goals. Comparisons are challenging given the quality and talent he possesses.”

Regarding his transfer to Betis, Fidalgo shared, “I had decided that I wanted to take this step, to leave Mexico for Europe and grow in a different environment and style of football. I needed to experience new challenges, and Manuel Pellegrini didn’t need much convincing; just the mention of Betis was enough for me to say yes. The project, the stability of Betis, the passionate supporters, and what this club represents made it an unparalleled opportunity for me.”

He expressed his readiness for upcoming matches, stating, “Yes, absolutely. I’ve been training and playing without any issues. Over the past five years, I’ve been involved in about 97% to 98% of the official matches. I trained this afternoon and will join the team for morning practice tomorrow. If the coach wants me, I’ll definitely be available for Thursday’s match. I’m eager to contribute.”

When asked about his preferred position, he explained, “I’ve played as a defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder, and even on the left wing. I feel most comfortable as an attacking midfielder or in a double pivot. I’m a player who always seeks to have the ball and be a solution for my teammates.”

Reflecting on transfer offers he received over the years, Fidalgo noted, “We had several proposals, but this one felt the most significant. It arrived at the right moment. I come from a massive club; Club América is unlike any other, but I’m confident I will be happy here because the passion of the fans is what matters most, and I understand that well.”

He mentioned his battles on the field with fellow player Nelson Deossa, stating, “I talked with him this morning; we’ve had great matches against each other in various tournaments. I believe we are currently tied in eliminations. He is an outstanding player, as demonstrated in the Club World Cup and now with his performances here.”

Fidalgo promised professionalism, saying, “I can’t promise you I’ll score 50 goals, but I assure you I’ll be a professional from day one until the last day I’m here. That’s how I earned the affection of everyone back in Mexico. I’m a humble person, a professional 24/7. That’s paramount. On the field, I’m a player who never hides.”

Discussing his adaptation to LaLiga, he said, “I’ll be able to tell you more in a week or a month. In Mexico, most matches are played at high altitudes, leading to a different style of play—slower, with more individual duels. I believe LaLiga is much more tactical, with well-organized teams. I’ve been studying football closely and am confident in my abilities. I look forward to proving myself from the very first moment I step on the pitch.”

On his current physical condition, he stated, “In Mexico, we have two tournaments—the Apertura and the Clausura—each starting with a sort of pre-season. My pre-season began on December 18, and I’ve played all three league matches since then, logging 90 minutes each time. I’ve trained every day without missing a session, so I’m in top physical shape.”

Fidalgo also expressed appreciation for Coach Manuel Pellegrini, saying, “This morning I met him and thanked him for his confidence and warm welcome. His track record here speaks for itself. The success Betis has achieved in various competitions is no coincidence. I am grateful for the welcome and am available for anything he needs.”

Regarding Sergio Canales, he shared, “I know he spoke very highly of me, and I expressed my gratitude to him for that. Beyond our friendship, he didn’t need to do it, yet it helped a lot. It was a privilege to share the field with him.”

On representing either Mexico or Spain at the national level, he stated, “Fortunately, I hold dual nationality. I was born in Spain but became a footballer in Mexico, so my affection for both countries is immense. I can’t say much more than that.”

“Santiago is, as everyone knows, possibly my footballing father. He has always believed in me, from my youth days at Madrid to my debut with the first team. We share a similar vision of football and professionalism. I haven’t spoken to him recently but was told he wished me the best. I’ve consulted him on many matters in the past,” Fidalgo concluded, reflecting on his journey.
