Mahmoud Dahoud’s Resurgence at Eintracht Frankfurt

omidbasir- Amidst the ongoing transitions at Eintracht Frankfurt, Mahmoud Dahoud, a former German international, seemed poised for yet another disappointing chapter in his career this summer. Following a challenging stint at Brighton in the summer of 2023, where he struggled to find his footing, Dahoud returned to VfB Stuttgart on loan during the latter half of the 2023/24 season.

Despite making a notable impact off the bench by scoring, Dahoud only managed one start under head coach Sebastian Hoeneß. After his contract with Brighton was terminated, he signed with Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer in the summer of 2024. This move was accompanied by an emotionally charged press conference, during which he announced his switch back to representing Germany after a brief and unsatisfactory period with Syria.

Under the guidance of SGE head coach Dino Toppmöller, Dahoud began to receive more playing time. Both Toppmöller and sporting director Markus Krösche commended him following an outstanding performance against VfL Bochum on matchday nine, where Dahoud scored a goal and provided an assist, seemingly marking a resurgence in his career.

However, this promising moment turned out to be a cruel false dawn, as Dahoud started only two more league matches after that milestone and made just three brief substitute appearances throughout the entire 2025 calendar year. Following a clearance to leave the club, he became a non-factor during training camp, appearing in just one of Toppmöller’s initial matchday squads this season.

Unexpectedly, he emerged as a starting midfielder against Mainz on matchday 10 and continued to impress in a recent match against Köln, where he scored his 14th career Bundesliga goal. Journalists covering the Bundesliga have expressed a sense of déjà vu regarding his performance.

Once again, Toppmöller and Krösche have praised Dahoud, drawing comparisons to their previous sentiments a year earlier. Whether this latest surge signifies a genuine turnaround remains uncertain, but it is clear that Dahoud will be afforded further opportunities.

Toppmöller remarked in an interview with Sport Bild, “He deserves it because he has simply kept at it over the last few months and has always been there for the whole group, despite his difficult situation. He always gave his all in training and never backed down. He played a decent game against Mainz, and it was particularly satisfying for him to achieve this success.”

Krösche echoed these sentiments, stating, “He’s had bad spells in his career before and has learned to deal with them. I think that helps him a lot. He’s always given his all and made himself available. Now he’s been given his chance.”
