Kobbie Mainoo has garnered attention recently as his frustrations at Manchester United become increasingly evident. The young midfielder has yet to start a Premier League match this season, having made only 11 substitute appearances in the league. This lack of playing time has sparked speculation about a potential move away from the club during the January transfer window, as Mainoo seeks regular first-team football.

Adding to the intrigue, Mainoo’s half-brother made headlines by wearing a ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ T-shirt during the recent 4-4 draw against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. This gesture drew sharp criticism from club legend Roy Keane, while current manager Amorim advised Mainoo to focus on fighting for his place in the squad. Amorim remarked, “Kobbie needs to fight for his job. It’s not a negative aspect to be on the bench at Manchester United at just 20 years old. Many greats, including Ronaldo and Rooney, faced similar situations early in their careers. Let’s keep the focus and avoid unnecessary distractions. My priority is to help the team succeed.”

Former United academy standout Ravel Morrison also weighed in on Mainoo’s predicament. Although Morrison was once heralded as a tremendous talent, he made only three appearances for the first team before departing in 2012 largely due to off-field issues. In a discussion on the Filthy Fellas podcast, he voiced his concern, saying, “They’re taking the p*ss. He’s a top player, and while coming on for just a minute isn’t ideal, he deserves more opportunities to showcase his abilities. He really needs a run of games.”

When asked whether Mainoo fits into Amorim’s system, Morrison humorously replied, “You know what? I don’t know what system United plays. I only watch Arsenal, innit?”

Amid these developments, rumors have circulated about a potential January exit for Mainoo, with Serie A club Napoli reportedly interested in acquiring him to reunite with former teammates Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund. However, an injury to Bruno Fernandes has complicated matters, as it appears Manchester United may block Mainoo’s exit to retain squad depth during this crucial period.

While this news may be disappointing for Mainoo, it simultaneously presents an opportunity for him to gain more playing time, especially considering Manuel Ugarte’s current struggles at Old Trafford.

Manchester United has faced challenges recently, having secured just two victories in their last eight matches, both against lower-ranked teams, Wolves and Crystal Palace. Amorim will be aiming for his squad to provide some festive cheer for supporters, with two upcoming matches before the end of 2025: a home fixture against Newcastle on Boxing Day, followed by a trip to Wolves four days later.
