Mainoo s Remarkable Resurgence Under CarrickMainoo s Remarkable Resurgence Under Carrick

Kobbie Mainoo’s return to form has been as captivating as his initial rise to prominence in November 2023, when he made an impressive debut under Erik Ten Hag at Everton. At that moment, he appeared to be the most talented player on the pitch and quickly established himself as a key figure.

Despite his past potential, there were concerns about whether Mainoo’s abilities had diminished during his lengthy absence from the first team. In his 11 appearances as a substitute under Amorim this season—none of which exceeded 45 minutes—he struggled to make an impact. His only start, against Grimsby Town, ended in one of United’s most humiliating cup exits, and his performance in the FA Cup against Brighton did little to restore his confidence, which seemed to fade along with his trademark smile.

However, since Michael Carrick’s appointment, Mainoo has experienced a remarkable resurgence. He has consistently outperformed his teammates in terms of distance covered in three of the last four matches, directly contradicting Amorim’s doubts about his physical suitability for high-level competition.

In the match against Tottenham, Mainoo led the team in duels won and successful dribbles. His clever assist for Bryan Mbeumo’s opening goal was his second in four games, with his only other assist occurring during that unfortunate match at Grimsby.

Mainoo has also embraced a more aggressive playing style over the last four games, elevating his passing game to new heights. Imagining his potential had he received regular playing time under Amorim is both exciting and frustrating.

On a lighthearted note, former footballer Gary Lineker quipped that Mainoo might consider legal action against the Portuguese coach for the negative impact on his career. Yet, those who witnessed Mainoo’s confident and fluid play against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham would find it hard to believe he had not started a Premier League match for eight months.

Carrick, while praising Mainoo for his seamless reintegration into the team, cautioned against placing excessive expectations on him after such a prolonged absence. “Credit to him for coming in and finding his rhythm, which is challenging after time away,” Carrick remarked. “There’s certainly more to come from him, given his age and stage in his career. He’s just beginning to showcase his full potential, and he possesses valuable experience from significant matches and high-pressure scenarios.”

Looking ahead, the prospect of competing in the World Cup looms larger for Mainoo. The English midfield is more competitive than ever, especially with Thomas Tuchel’s preference for a double-pivot of Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice, alongside established players like Jordan Henderson who brings experience and guidance.

Nico O’Reilly has also impressed in midfield for City, but Mainoo possesses a unique ability to receive the ball comfortably in any situation—a crucial trait for England, which has struggled to maintain control in matches for over three decades.

Lineker previously described Mainoo as England’s standout player during Euro 2024, highlighting his potential to enhance the team’s performance. Former England and United midfielder Owen Hargreaves noted the importance of having a player like Mainoo who can be trusted to manage possession in international football, especially against formidable opponents like City and Arsenal.

Mainoo’s achievements, including scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final and making a notable impact on the international stage, are impressive given that he had been sidelined for a year. As he continues to develop, the future looks bright for this promising young talent.

Although England has performed admirably in his absence, securing qualification without conceding a goal, Tuchel is known for fostering strong competition within the squad. If he seeks to invigorate the team ahead of the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan next month, Mainoo would be an ideal candidate, demonstrating that he has seamlessly returned to form after his time away.
