Mainz 05’s recent visit to Stadion An der Alten Försterei yielded just one point, a result that is unlikely to aid their fight against relegation in the Bundesliga. Currently positioned at the bottom of the league, the team requires more than mere draws to secure their place in the division.

The fact that they squandered a two-goal lead in the closing 13 minutes adds to the disappointment of the match.

Despite the unfavorable outcome, two former Union Berlin players now with Mainz appeared relatively upbeat post-match. Mainz head coach Urs Fischer, who previously spent five years at the club, reflected positively on his return. Striker Benedict Hollerbach, often cited as one of the Bundesliga’s most significant transfer disappointments this season, celebrated scoring his first goal for Mainz.

After 16 matchdays and 12 league appearances, the 24-year-old finally found the net, although he expressed a mix of frustration and relief in the mixed zone. “A win would have been great for morale, and I have larger ambitions beyond just scoring one goal,” Hollerbach stated. “Nevertheless, I am very happy to have scored at my former workplace. For some reason, I find it easier to score here. I hope this marks the beginning of something greater.”

In a post-match interview with Sky Germany, Fischer acknowledged the psychological burden of the situation. “When there is something to lose, sometimes the pressure can be overwhelming. We needed to reward ourselves for our performance and absolutely had to win today.”

On reflecting about his return, Fischer remarked, “Now that I’m back as an opponent, I know which set of stairs to use, and I had no trouble finding the guest locker room. It was a wonderful day. I reunited with many colleagues with whom I enjoyed significant success. However, my primary focus remained on the game itself.”
