Manchester United has begun to show signs of resurgence under the management of Ruben Amorim in recent months. The Portuguese head coach has successfully integrated new signings, leading to improved performances following a disappointing conclusion to the 2024/25 season.

Currently, the Red Devils occupy the sixth position in the league table, just outside of the Champions League places due to goal difference. However, recent injury setbacks have compounded the challenges faced by the team, particularly the loss of captain and key player Bruno Fernandes. This situation was evident during their narrow 1-0 victory against Newcastle on Friday, where they appeared to be lacking in squad depth.

Club legend Wayne Rooney has voiced his concerns regarding the current state of the squad, fearing that without additional investment in the January transfer window, the team might slip further down the congested Premier League table. Appearing as a pundit on BBC Match of the Day, Rooney stated, “I was worried when I saw the performance, if I’m being honest. The manager changed the formation to a back four, which many have been calling for. Although they did not concede a goal, they seemed uncomfortable, especially under pressure from Newcastle in the second half.

“When I examine the squad and the bench, it’s clear they need reinforcements to compete effectively and aim for a top-four finish. While it’s encouraging to see young players gaining opportunities, these situations need to arise appropriately, as this approach is not sustainable. Losing Bruno is a significant setback.”

Rooney highlighted that United managed only 33 percent possession in the match against Newcastle, adding, “When fans attend matches at Old Trafford, they expect to see their team in control, creating chances, and delivering entertaining football. It was a lackluster performance, yet they managed to secure a win.”

In contrast, Coach Amorim has expressed caution regarding potential panic buys during the winter transfer window. He emphasized the importance of strategic planning and avoiding hasty decisions that could lead to mistakes. “What we cannot do is reach January and act out of urgency,” he explained. “I will not pressure the club’s leadership to bring in numerous players, as we have a plan in place.

“If we must endure some hardships, the club’s long-term interests come first. While we need points right now, we must seek sustainable solutions and adhere to our plan. It is evident that we are facing a challenging moment, but we must manage it.”

The team is currently missing several key players, including Fernandes, as well as center-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, while Mason Mount is also sidelined due to injury. Additionally, three players are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations: Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui. This scenario necessitated the inclusion of academy graduates Jack Fletcher and Tyler Fredricson on the bench against Newcastle, alongside fellow young talents Tyler Fletcher, Shea Lacey, and Bendito Mantato.

With the January transfer window approaching, Manchester United has been linked with midfielders such as James Garner and Conor Gallagher, while long-term targets include Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, and Carlos Baleba.
