Manchester City celebrated Rayan Cherki’s late winner in a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest, propelling them back to the summit of the Premier League ahead of Arsenal’s match against Brighton.

Manager Pep Guardiola had cautioned his players to maintain their fitness during the festive season, and the current form of the team suggests there is little to trim. This win marks City’s eighth consecutive victory across all competitions, contributing to their momentum as they aim to tilt the title race in their favor.

January presents a challenging schedule with nine matches, including the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle and the conclusion of the Champions League group stage. Following early setbacks in the season, where City lost two of their first three Premier League matches, they have rebounded impressively, suffering only two losses in their last fifteen games and currently leading the league in scoring.

Despite Guardiola’s concerns regarding overindulgence during the holidays, he welcomed this vital late goal from Cherki, which was instrumental in maintaining City’s strong position.

Guardiola expressed confidence that the team has regained its rhythm following this significant win. While facing a formidable Nottingham Forest, City struggled against the physical defense led by Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo, limiting Erling Haaland’s effectiveness. Gianluigi Donnarumma, too, faced challenges from Milenkovic, while Josko Gvardiol managed to avoid a yellow card despite some tensions on the field.

The performance may not have been classic, but City has accumulated 24 points from the last 27 available, the only setback being a defeat to Newcastle in November. Guardiola noted the importance of resilience, stating, “It’s more about how you suffer and defend, and the acceptance that you can improve while still being in the game.”

The victory was crucial, especially against a strong opponent managed by Sean Dyche, who has transformed Forest into a competitive side. Former City goalkeeper Joe Hart remarked on the significance of the win, highlighting the team’s determination in a tough match as indicative of a championship-winning mindset.

Reflecting on last season’s shortcomings, Guardiola revealed that candid discussions during the Club World Cup helped to refocus the squad. He emphasized the importance of the team’s connection with fans and the commitment to fight for the club.

City faced several absences due to injuries and international duty, but the return of Rodri from a hamstring issue was a significant boost. Although he did not need to come off the bench, his presence added to the team’s narrative as they continue their title challenge. Meanwhile, Tijjani Reijnders is having a standout debut season, recently scoring in consecutive victories, and he expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.
