The 2024-25 season has been particularly challenging for City, who previously dominated the Premier League with four consecutive titles. Injuries and a notable decline in performance have turned this season into a testing period. While players and staff manage to find humor in their situation, there remains a collective determination to demonstrate their recovery from last season’s disappointment.

Pep Guardiola has been reticent to discuss potential achievements for this season, and early performances have been mixed. City secured victories against Manchester United and Napoli, alongside a respectable draw with Arsenal, but also endured losses to Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Aston Villa.

Despite their inconsistent form, City currently occupies second place in the league, ahead of an important clash against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. In a bid to regain momentum, Guardiola has altered his approach. He made the unconventional decision to cancel training the day before their Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund, allowing players a day of rest. Dortmund had an advantage, having played on Friday night, while City was in action on Sunday. Guardiola’s hope was that this move, which required special approval from UEFA, would highlight the need for better fixture scheduling and ultimately yield positive results. Changes within the squad have been pronounced, with over 1,500 games of experience lost due to the departures of key players such as Éderson, Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gündogan, and Kevin De Bruyne. Defender Josko Gvardiol noted this shift, commenting on the impact of losing established players. “You can feel it. A lot of guys aren’t here anymore, but that’s football.
