Manchester United has confirmed its commitment to have a renovated Old Trafford ready in time to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup.

On Friday, the football associations of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales officially submitted their joint bid to FIFA to host the tournament. Their candidacy was largely anticipated, as they were the only bidders for the event.

In March, United announced plans to vacate Old Trafford, their home for over a century, in favor of a new 100,000-seater stadium. This new venue has now been included in the shortlist of potential sites for the 2035 Women’s World Cup.

“The early plans are indeed exciting,” stated Mark Bullingham, chief executive of the England FA, during a press conference. “If completed, we would certainly advocate for its inclusion in the tournament, as it would be fitting to feature the best stadiums the country has to offer a decade from now.”

The proposed stadium is set to surpass Wembley, making it the largest in the United Kingdom.

Collette Roche, chief operating officer of Manchester United, expressed the club’s ambition: “We aim to construct a new 100,000-seater stadium that is equipped to host the most prestigious international football matches. This project will also contribute to the broader regeneration of the Old Trafford area, delivering extensive benefits to the local community, Greater Manchester, and the surrounding regions.”
