After months of mounting pressure, Manchester United has decisively parted ways with coach Ruben Amorim, effective January 5. This decision follows an explosive outburst directed towards the club’s board, which ultimately led to his dismissal.

Amorim’s tenure was marked by a struggle for positive results, culminating in a public statement after a 1-1 draw against Leeds, where he expressed a desire to fulfill his contract until 2027. However, this opportunity was denied, particularly after a contentious meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox prior to the match.

In a brief statement on the club’s official website, Manchester United confirmed the decision: “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”

With Amorim’s exit, focus has shifted to potential successors. Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder currently managing the Under-18 side, has been appointed as caretaker manager.

Reports from The Telegraph suggest that Oliver Glasner is a leading candidate for the managerial position at Old Trafford. The United hierarchy has expressed admiration for Glasner, particularly for his work at Crystal Palace. His contract with the London club is set to expire at the end of the current season, with no extension in place as of yet.

Additionally, there is notable interest in Roberto De Zerbi, the former Brighton and Hove Albion head coach currently at Marseille. United had previously interviewed De Zerbi in the summer of 2024 amid uncertainties regarding Erik ten Hag’s future, although the latter was ultimately granted a new contract before his departure in October. There is considerable respect for De Zerbi within the club, although Glasner is viewed as the more immediate target.

Crystal Palace is expected to resist attempts to retain Glasner, meaning a potential move for United may not occur until summer, as BBC Sport reports that the Red Devils are aiming to secure a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season.

Fletcher, while well-acquainted with the club from his playing days, is not considered a candidate for the permanent role. Former United midfielder Michael Carrick, who is currently without a position after leaving Middlesbrough last summer, had previously been mentioned as a possibility. However, sources indicate that Carrick is unlikely to pursue a temporary role.

Glasner’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, which presented challenges for Amorim, makes him the favored long-term choice for Manchester United. Other names, including former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, have also emerged in discussions regarding the club’s future direction.
