Manchester United has officially confirmed the departure of manager Ruben Amorim after 14 months in the position, following the team’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road. Amorim expressed significant frustration in a post-match interview, which contributed to the club’s decision to part ways with him.

In his remarks, Amorim stated, “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not just the coach. My role is clear, and it will remain so for the next 18 months, unless the board decides otherwise. I want to make it clear that I will not resign; I intend to fulfill my responsibilities until a replacement is appointed.”

He emphasized, “I am here to manage, not merely coach. If the criticisms from figures like Gary Neville are too much for the club to handle, then we need significant changes. I expect everyone, from the scouting department to the sporting director, to execute their responsibilities while I fulfill mine over the next 18 months.”

In the interim, Manchester United has appointed former midfielder Darren Fletcher to take over as head coach while the club considers a permanent replacement for Amorim. However, the recent developments have sparked dissatisfaction among fans, prompting the protest group ‘The 58’ to call for a vote of no confidence in the club’s leadership.

A spokesperson for the group stated, “After a series of missteps, the management appears incompetent, reducing the club to a mere spectacle. We are witnessing underwhelming performances from a team lacking identity and ambition, while the off-field situation is even more chaotic.”

Concerns have been raised regarding the decision-making process, particularly involving CEO Omar Berrada, who allegedly prioritized the concerns of a close associate rather than demonstrating independent leadership. The spokesperson added, “This situation showcases the ongoing dysfunction at our club, where executives seem to be learning on the job, jeopardizing our results and credibility.”

The spokesperson also criticized the ownership structure, stating, “The Glazers continue to extract wealth from the club while Jim Ratcliffe’s actions have betrayed the faith of many supporters. His role was anticipated as a catalyst for change, yet it appears he has only become a shield for the Glazers, allowing them to continue their behind-the-scenes asset stripping.”

In response to the current turmoil, a protest is scheduled during Manchester United’s upcoming match against Fulham at Old Trafford on February 1st. The spokesperson urged fans to participate, declaring, “We must act now to protect the proud history of Manchester United, which has been built over 150 years. If we do not rise against these changes, we risk passing on a club unrecognizable and stripped of its culture.”

Looking ahead, Manchester United is set to resume play on Sunday in the FA Cup third round against Brighton, with Fletcher continuing as interim manager. The club is also reportedly in discussions with former players Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding a potential managerial position until the end of the season.
