Manchester United Responds to Controversial Comments by Co-Owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe

omidbasir- On Thursday, Manchester United emphasized its commitment to being “inclusive and welcoming” in light of comments made by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who stated that the UK has been “colonized by immigrants.”

Ratcliffe expressed regret if his remarks, made during a Wednesday Sky News interview, offended anyone. His comments have drawn significant backlash from political figures, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham.

Sources indicate that the English Football Association (FA) is aware of Ratcliffe’s statements and is currently reviewing the situation.

In a statement, Manchester United said, “Our club prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming environment. Our diverse group of players, staff, and global supporters reflect the history and heritage of Manchester—a city that anyone can call home.”

The club also highlighted its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion through its All Red All Equal campaign, launched in 2016. They reiterated that these principles are integral to their policies and culture, supported by their attainment of the Premier League’s Advanced Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Standard.

Earlier on Thursday, Ratcliffe issued his own statement: “I apologize for my choice of language that has offended some people in the UK and Europe. However, it is crucial to discuss controlled and well-managed immigration that contributes to economic growth.”

He clarified that his comments, made during his address at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, were intended to highlight the need for government regulation of migration in conjunction with investments in skills, industry, and job creation to ensure shared long-term prosperity.

Despite his apology, the Manchester United Muslim Supporters’ Club (MUMSC) released a statement expressing dissatisfaction, stating, “We do not believe this sufficiently addresses the seriousness of what was said. The term ‘colonised’ holds significant weight and cannot be dismissed as merely poor phrasing.”

They further emphasized that expressing regret for causing offense does not equate to recognizing the broader implications of the words used. “Leadership requires accountability and an openness to debate,” they added.

During the Sky News interview, Ratcliffe remarked, “You can’t have an economy with 9 million people on benefits and significant immigration. The UK has been colonized by immigrants, and it’s costing too much money.”

Should the FA decide to launch a formal investigation, it is likely to focus on FA Rule E3.1, which mandates that all participants act in the best interests of the game and refrain from behavior that could bring it into disrepute. If found in breach of this rule, Ratcliffe could be subject to sanctions.

Burnham responded to Ratcliffe’s comments, stating, “These statements contradict everything Manchester represents. Our city has historically been a place where individuals of all races and faiths have united to build our community and institutions, including Manchester United FC.”

He criticized the portrayal of immigrants as a hostile force, deeming it inaccurate and inflammatory. Burnham also noted that the contributions of footballers and professionals from diverse backgrounds have significantly enriched Greater Manchester.

In a subtle critique of the Glazer family, who hold a majority stake in the club, Burnham added, “If there is any criticism to be made, it should be directed at those who have offered little to our community while benefiting financially from one of our most cherished institutions.”
