Manchester United intends to initiate discussions with captain Bruno Fernandes about his future ahead of the upcoming World Cup. Club officials are keen to convey that they wish to retain the midfielder at Old Trafford for at least one more year, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Fernandes narrowly avoided a transfer to Al Hilal last summer, and further interest in the Portugal international is anticipated at the conclusion of the current season. United is prepared to allow the 31-year-old to decide his next move; however, the club’s priority is to maintain their captain during what is expected to be another transitional summer, particularly with a new permanent manager set to replace Ruben Amorim.

Currently, Fernandes is under contract until 2027, with an option for an additional year that could extend his tenure with the club until June 2028. There was internal surprise regarding comments made by Fernandes in a December interview, where he suggested that the club had wanted him to leave last summer, as this contradicted statements made in an earlier October interview.

According to sources, United plans to seek an indication from Fernandes and his representatives regarding his future before the World Cup. Although Fernandes has indicated that he will make no decisions until after the tournament, United is eager to finalize their transfer plans in advance.

The majority of the summer budget has already been allocated to strengthen the midfield, with players such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba identified as key targets. Should Fernandes depart, the club will also need to find a suitable replacement.

Additionally, United is focused on securing transfers for several young players before the January transfer deadline. Reports indicate that midfielder Toby Collyer is close to joining Championship side Hull City on loan, while striker Ethan Wheatley is nearing a temporary move to Bradford City in League One. Defender Tyler Fredricson, who has made two first-team appearances this season, is also available for loan until the end of the season.
