Manchester United could have achieved an even greater victory against Manchester City, as goals from Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Mount were disallowed on either side of halftime. The team also struck the woodwork twice, thanks to efforts from Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo.

City’s goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, made a series of crucial saves while Pep Guardiola’s side struggled to cope with their rivals. In a match held at Old Trafford on Saturday, City managed just one shot on target as United ended a four-game winless streak.

In the aftermath of the game, former Red Devils left-back Patrice Evra criticized City forward Rayan Cherki for displaying a lack of respect for United. Cherki, who joined City from Lyon this summer, had previously expressed disdain for United after they defeated Lyon in last season’s Europa League.

Following a training session with his new teammates in the United States, Cherki stated, “I didn’t like it when Manchester United won the game against Lyon because I am a Lyonnais. Now I am waiting for the game to ‘kill’ them. I just wanted to go to Manchester City.”

Cherki, who began the Manchester Derby on the bench, aimed for a win over City’s rivals but fell short. After United’s 2-0 triumph, the 22-year-old’s comments circulated widely on social media, prompting Evra to mock him, saying, “Amazing player but when you don’t respect United, that’s what you get. FOREVRA RED.”

Despite replacing Phil Foden at halftime, Cherki struggled to leave an impact, failing to create any chances or take a shot, while United delivered a stellar performance that hindered City’s title aspirations.

The result, paired with Arsenal’s 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest, places City seven points behind the league leaders after 22 matches.

In light of the 2-0 defeat, Guardiola refrained from blaming the officials for the loss. The Manchester Derby marked City’s sixth match in 17 days, during which they have only won twice—once against lower league team Exeter in the FA Cup.

Guardiola attributed the loss to a lack of energy rather than the controversial decision by referee Anthony Taylor not to send Diogo Dalot off for a dangerous tackle on Jeremy Doku. “The better team won,” Guardiola conceded. “They had something we didn’t have. We always talk about the energy we need. It relates to how you defend and how you engage in certain situations.”

He continued, “It’s my 27th derby, and today we were not at the required level to win this type of game. We had that energy just four days ago at Newcastle, but today was different. We need to accept it and move on.”

Guardiola did acknowledge that Dalot’s challenge warranted a red card, yet he emphasized that attributing the loss solely to that decision would not help the team grow.

“For 85 minutes, we could have been playing against ten men, but we lacked the energy. I could blame the referee, but that doesn’t help us progress.”

Looking ahead, City will aim to rebound when they face Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League on Tuesday, while their focus will soon shift to their next Premier League match against Wolves. United, meanwhile, is set to visit league leaders Arsenal for an exciting clash next weekend.
