Ruben Amorim, the head coach of Manchester United, has expressed his belief that Kobbie Mainoo embodies the future of the club, although the young midfielder may need to be patient for his opportunity to shine.

At just 20 years old, Mainoo has found himself sidelined at Old Trafford, having made only one start in the Carabao Cup among his 12 appearances this season. In a recent statement, Amorim emphasized that Mainoo must “fight for his job,” yet a calf injury sustained in training prior to the team’s defeat against Aston Villa has further delayed his chances, coinciding with the absence of seven other players from the squad.

Despite the current challenges, Amorim remains optimistic about Mainoo’s long-term prospects. “Kobbie Mainoo will always have the opportunity he deserves. He has played in various positions: he can assume a defensive midfield role, or adapt to play as we did in our last match, akin to Mason Mount’s position as a forward who drops into midfield,” Amorim stated. “I firmly believe he will be a crucial part of Manchester United’s future. He simply needs to be patient, as circumstances in football can change rapidly.”

While Amorim downplayed the likelihood of Mainoo going on loan in January—especially given his recent injury—he acknowledged the need for a suitable replacement should that situation arise. “If we do not procure another player, it becomes challenging to let someone go,” he remarked. “Even with a complete squad, we are still somewhat short in terms of available players, which makes it difficult for anyone to depart if we cannot secure a substitute.”

The midfield position is clearly an area in need of reinforcement. With the transfer window approaching, and key players like Casemiro and Harry Maguire facing contract scenarios—Maguire’s contract expiring in the summer while Casemiro has a 12-month option—Amorim is cognizant of the broader implications. “There is no decision yet regarding their contracts,” he stated regarding the duo’s future.

Amorim affirmed that he is focused on the current season’s demands rather than future commitments. “We have much to accomplish and must assess our plans for the next season, especially concerning European competitions. Right now, our primary focus is on our immediate tasks. I am content with our current squad, but the future remains uncertain.”

When addressing the potential need for new signings in January, Amorim remained composed. “No, I wouldn’t be disappointed if we do not acquire reinforcements next month. Yes, we are currently facing challenges, but the club has a comprehensive plan in place. We will adhere to that plan. If an opportunity arises to sign a player we believe will contribute to the club’s future, we will act accordingly. If not, we have promising talents such as Jack Fletcher, Shea Lacey, and soon, Amad, Nous Mazraoui, and Bryan Mbeumo returning, alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes. We shall see how it unfolds.”
