Manchester United allocated around £230 million ($310 million) for player acquisitions during the summer transfer window. However, this figure could have been significantly higher had they succeeded in persuading Brighton to part with midfielder Baleba.

Head coach Amorim is keen to secure an athletic defensive midfielder to enhance his Red Devils squad. Although the Cameroon international displays remarkable talent, Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, acknowledged earlier this season that the transfer rumors had created distractions for the young player.

“When a young player learns of interest from Manchester United and a substantial offer, it can undoubtedly impact him deeply,” Hurzeler stated in September. “This is part of his development; understanding that strong performances may lead to big offers from prestigious clubs. However, it’s crucial for him to remain humble and continue growing with Brighton, which is an area we must focus on. I cannot definitively say if the rumors have affected him, but we must remember that he is still a young player with emotions and personal challenges; it’s our responsibility to support him.”

Baleba has made 19 appearances for Brighton this season, with 16 of those being starts; however, he has only completed the full 90 minutes on two occasions. The former Lille player remains committed to Brighton, where he is contracted until 2029.

In December, Baleba remarked, “I don’t believe it affected me negatively, but I did feel a lot of pressure. At the start of this season, I aimed to replicate my performances from last season. Each day, I strive to work hard and regain that level. Did I place too much pressure on myself? Yes, but I consider it a positive. It forces me to navigate this challenging period, get back on track, and continue my hard work.”

Reports indicate that Manchester United has not ceased discussions regarding a potential signing of Baleba. According to Sky Sports, the club is exploring this possibility in January. However, a deal is ‘not expected to progress’ this month, as Brighton is determined to retain him at least until the summer. United’s priority for 2026 is to recruit at least one top central midfielder, keeping Baleba on their radar alongside Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Wolves’ Joao Gomes. They are also monitoring promising talents Ayyoub Bouaddi (18) from Lille and Christos Mouzakitis (19) from Olympiacos.

As the January transfer window opens, United’s immediate focus lies in their upcoming match against Leeds United at Elland Road, following a disappointing draw with Wolves earlier this week. In addition to their player pursuits, the club is considering Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, Rennes center-back Jeremy Jacquet, and RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande. They seem to have moved on from Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, who is set to join Manchester City.

Amorim commented on potential January signings: “The transfer window will not result in significant changes. Currently, there are no discussions regarding adjustments to the squad. We have a clear process and strategy moving forward. While we are close to Champions League positions, there are also eight teams competing behind us. Our focus must remain on the next game.”
