Marco van Basten Advocates for Gradual Progression for AZ Star Kees SmitMarco van Basten Advocates for Gradual Progression for AZ Star Kees Smit

AZ is currently working with super agent Jorge Mendes on a significant transfer involving Kees Smit. Former top footballer Marco van Basten, however, considers this a misguided decision, particularly for the player himself.

Van Basten suggests that Smit should remain in the Netherlands, ideally spending three years at AZ or joining a leading club such as Ajax, PSV, or Feyenoord before venturing abroad. He emphasizes the importance of being settled, perhaps with a partner, to mitigate feelings of isolation that can arise from being on the periphery of a team. “If you end up playing for the reserves, you might feel very lonely, which is not beneficial,” Van Basten remarked during the program Rondo on Ziggo Sport.

He expresses concern about pushing Smit into a European career too early, stating, “I find it a waste to rush Smit into Europe now.”

Hugo Borst has also shared his thoughts, pointing out that while technical director Max Huiberts may be eager to conclude his tenure with a major transfer, it would be wise for Smit to remain in the Eredivisie for at least another eighteen months. He advises against any summer departure, citing the numerous egos and vested interests surrounding the potential sale. “Huiberts is leaving and naturally desires to sell a player for sixty million euros. But I feel it is premature to rush Smit into Europe. If he is sold to Manchester City or Real Madrid at such a price, they will assess his performance in the Netherlands, which at this stage is negligible. He has shown glimpses of talent, but ultimately, he has yet to achieve anything substantial.”
