Marin Ljubicic Set for Loan Move to Fortuna Düsseldorf

Patrick Berger reports that striker Marin Ljubicic from 1. FC Union Berlin is on the brink of a loan transfer to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the 2. Bundesliga. The 23-year-old forward had previously been linked to a loan move to Schalke 04 earlier in the transfer window. However, Schalke’s recent acquisition of Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko prompted Union to seek an alternative destination for Ljubicic.

A medical examination for Ljubicic is set for Friday. According to Berger, the Croatian will join the Flingeraner on a six-month loan, which will not include a purchase option. Union head coach Steffen Baumgart had recently begun utilizing the previously unused forward before a thigh injury sidelined him.

Despite logging no minutes during the initial months of the current Bundesliga campaign, Ljubicic made a notable impact as a substitute, scoring twice in consecutive appearances off the bench this month. His contributions included a crucial late equalizer against FC Augsburg on matchday 17; however, he did not feature in Union’s subsequent match against Stuttgart due to his thigh injury, which also kept him from participating in the latest fixture against Borussia Dortmund.
