Mason Greenwood Named Ligue 1 Player of the Month Amid Career ResurgenceMason Greenwood Named Ligue 1 Player of the Month Amid Career Resurgence

Mason Greenwood has been honored as the Ligue 1 Player of the Month for October, as announced by the UNFP (Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels) on Sunday. This accolade marks a pivotal achievement for Greenwood, who is actively rebuilding his career in France after transferring from Manchester United.

In October, Greenwood showcased exceptional form, scoring five goals in Ligue 1. A standout moment included an impressive four-goal performance during Marseille’s commanding 6-2 victory against Le Havre. Additionally, he contributed a goal in a closely contested 2-1 defeat against Lens, further demonstrating his consistent threat in attack. This remarkable goal tally and overall impact allowed him to outshine competitors such as Strasbourg’s Joaquin Panichelli and OGC Nice’s Sofiane Diop, earning 38% of the total votes.

This recognition marks the second occasion Greenwood has been named Ligue 1 Player of the Month since joining Marseille in the summer of 2024, underscoring his substantial influence on the French top flight.

Greenwood’s current season statistics further highlight his pivotal role at Marseille. To date, he has registered nine goals and provided four assists across 15 appearances in all competitions. This follows a highly successful debut season in 2024-25, during which he made an immediate impact after his permanent transfer from Manchester United.

In his inaugural season in Ligue 1, Greenwood netted an impressive 21 league goals in 34 matches, tying with PSG’s Ousmane Dembele for the French Golden Boot. Marseille concluded that campaign in second place behind Paris Saint-Germain, underscoring Greenwood’s vital contribution to their league challenge. His overall record with Olympique de Marseille stands at 31 goals and ten assists in 51 matches across all competitions, as reported by AFP.

Currently, Marseille is embroiled in a tight race for the Ligue 1 title, trailing league leaders PSG by just two points. Greenwood’s prolific scoring and creative play are crucial to their ambitions.

Despite his strong club form, Greenwood’s international future remains a topic of considerable discussion. He made his sole senior international appearance for England in a Nations League match against Iceland in 2020. Following serious criminal allegations, which were subsequently dropped, his relationship with the Three Lions seemed to diminish, leading to him being “blacklisted by the FA and head coach Thomas Tuchel from selection,” according to the Daily Mail.

Earlier this year, Greenwood obtained Jamaican citizenship through his heritage, thus becoming eligible to represent the Jamaican national team. Jamaica’s manager, former England coach Steve McClaren, even called him up for World Cup qualifiers in September; however, Greenwood opted not to commit at that time.

McClaren commented in September: “We acquired a passport and expected him to join this camp, but after discussions with his family, he decided not to commit at this time. He’s taking his time with that decision.” He added, “We will continue to pursue him because I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica and respects Jamaica. He wants to focus on club football right now.”

Despite these circumstances, reports indicate that Greenwood is “obsessed” with the idea of returning to St George’s Park and still harbors aspirations of playing for England again, despite the current stance of the FA and Tuchel. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, a return to the England squad seems improbable, yet Greenwood’s ambition remains steadfast.

Greenwood’s impressive performances in France have inevitably ignited speculation regarding a potential return to the Premier League. Although a move back to English football is deemed “extremely unlikely” in the short term due to the considerable public scrutiny an English club would face, reports have emerged of interest from Premier League teams.

TEAMtalk has reported that Tottenham and West Ham are interested in signing Greenwood in 2026. Spurs are reportedly in search of a “dynamic, energetic player,” while West Ham views him as a “potential game-changer.” Nonetheless, the report also suggests significant interest from various European clubs, including Atletico Madrid, which is keen to secure him following his loan spell at Getafe. Additionally, Saudi Pro League clubs such as Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr are rumored to be preparing lucrative offers; however, Greenwood’s current preference is to remain in Europe and compete in the Champions League.

As Marseille continues to chase the Ligue 1 title, just two points behind PSG, Greenwood will remain a central figure in their campaign. His goal-scoring abilities will be critical for their domestic success.

Looking ahead, Greenwood is poised to face English clubs Newcastle and Liverpool in upcoming Champions League fixtures. These matches will provide a prominent platform for him to showcase his talents against top-tier European competition, further highlighting his abilities on the international club stage. His performances in these high-profile encounters could have implications for future transfer movements and potentially influence his international aspirations as he focuses on club football in the immediate future.
