Matarazzo Reflects on Match Performance and Areas for ImprovementMatarazzo Reflects on Match Performance and Areas for Improvement

omidbasir- Pellegrino Matarazzo expressed disappointment that despite having control of the game for most of the match and registering 18 shots, his Real Sociedad side could not secure a victory against Atlético Madrid. He believes that his team deserved to win, given their effort until the final whistle.

Matarazzo summarized the match by stating, “I am very pleased with the players’ performance. They played exceptionally well as a team, each understanding their responsibilities. We maintained possession when possible and counter-attacked effectively. Did we deserve to win? I think we controlled the game for nearly all phases and created 18 shots. Soler’s last shot typically goes in for a win, and then it’s considered merited. We created ample opportunities; I truly believe the players deserved the win, but we were unable to achieve it. We need to continue working on all aspects of our game to improve our effectiveness.”

The Italian-American coach recognized the pressing need for his team to secure full points. “I think we can take pride in the initial steps we’ve made, the effort the players have put in, and the quality of our play. However, we must improve both defensively and offensively; we need more points.”

Matarazzo faced questions regarding the timing of his substitutions and the consistency in his starting lineup. “I make substitutions when I feel they are necessary. The players were performing well, so I saw no reason to change until much later. Regarding the regularity of the lineup, I am open to making significant changes if needed, but only based on what I have observed in previous matches and training sessions.”

When asked about two controversial referee decisions, Matarazzo supported the referee’s performance. “I would say the referee did a good job today; it was clearly offside, and there was no reason for protest. As for the penalty, if VAR had intervened, it would not have been overturned, but I believe it was the correct decision as it was not a penalty.”

Lastly, he shared his thoughts on the atmosphere at Anoeta. “I will be honest. When I am in the match, I am very focused on the players and their actions on the field. One of my assistants reminded me not to forget to enjoy the moment. There were times when I stepped back, took a breath, and felt the very positive energy from the stadium and the fans. I loved how they turned their backs to celebrate the goal; it was something truly special.”
