Matheus Cunha emerged as the match-winner for Manchester United on Sunday, netting a spectacular late goal that secured a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Emirates Stadium. Alongside Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu also found the back of the net, handing the Red Devils their first home defeat of the season against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. This result means that Michael Carrick has accumulated six points from two matches since taking over the managerial role from Ruben Amorim, while Arsenal now face a third consecutive match without a win, leading the Premier League by just four points over Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Harry Maguire expressed his appreciation for Carrick’s leadership after the match, stating to Sky Sports: “It was absolutely massive. We know that in the first game, the derby at Old Trafford, you’re always motivated, and one-off results can occur. Therefore, we had to validate that performance today. We discussed it prior to the match, understanding the challenge of facing the league leaders, who have excelled this season. To overcome a setback and secure the winner late on showcased a magnificent performance. Michael [Carrick] has been exceptional since arriving, bringing fresh energy and galvanizing the team. Winning both tough matches is truly magnificent.”

Carrick, however, downplayed his impact, remarking: “It’s only been 10 days. We recognize that we are not yet perfect. This is merely the beginning, and while it serves as a good starting point, we need to build upon it in the coming weeks.”

Cunha also shared his thoughts on Carrick’s influence since taking charge, commenting on BBC’s Match of the Day: “He understands the essence of this club, having played here for many years. He knows what the fans expect and strives to instill that in us. He continuously reminds us that we must unite, especially in challenging moments. I believe we demonstrated great character and strength as a group. Coming to Arsenal, arguably the best team in the world today, is always a daunting task. They have worked with Mikel [Arteta] for a long time and are well-versed in his tactics, making our victory even more significant. We are Manchester United, and our aim is always to win.”

Looking ahead, Carrick and Manchester United will prepare for their next Premier League match against Fulham at Old Trafford. Following impressive wins against Arsenal and Manchester City, Carrick will seek to extend this winning streak to three games and enhance United’s prospects for qualifying for the Champions League.
