Max Dowman, a promising teenager from Arsenal, has taken a significant step in his career by signing a pre-contract agreement with the Premier League leaders. This agreement will enable the 16-year-old England youth international to officially sign professional terms upon turning 17 on December 31.

Dowman, who is versatile enough to play both on the wing and as an attacking midfielder, has quickly risen to prominence as one of the most sought-after young players across European football. However, he has chosen to continue his development in North London with Arsenal.

Manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his admiration for Dowman, describing him as one of the most exceptional young talents he has encountered, even drawing a comparison to Lionel Messi. Arteta remarked, “Certainly one of the best. What he’s done with us at the age of 15 is remarkable. Personally, I haven’t witnessed anything like it before, apart from with a player who was at Barcelona, but perhaps not even that. He possesses not only immense talent but also a charisma and personality that allow him to remain composed, regardless of the situation, the stadium, or the opposition. That is a tremendous quality to possess.”

Dowman, who has been part of the Arsenal academy since the age of eight, shared his enthusiasm about the agreement, stating, “I’ve been at the club my whole life, so this really means a lot to me. There is a clear pathway here for players who have emerged from our academy, like Bukayo Saka, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri, and they all serve as great sources of inspiration for me. It’s incredible to have role models nearby who have gone through similar experiences.”

As part of his contract, Dowman will begin his journey as a scholar in the summer before advancing to a professional deal. At just 15 years and 234 days old, he made history as the second-youngest player to represent Arsenal and the second-youngest to play in the Premier League, with teammate Nwaneri holding both records.

In November, he further solidified his reputation by becoming the youngest player to participate in a Champions League match when he came on as a substitute during the team’s 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague. This season, Dowman has already made five senior appearances, although he has faced a setback due to an ankle injury.
