Messi s Continued Dominance in American Soccer A Look AheadMessi s Continued Dominance in American Soccer A Look Ahead

Barcelona legend Lionel Messi made the ambitious decision to pursue the American dream in 2023 as he approached the end of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Lured across the Atlantic by Manchester United icon David Beckham, Messi became part of an exciting project unfolding in South Florida.

As an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi has added a remarkable array of silverware to his collection, including the Leagues Cup, Supporters Shield, and MLS Cup, solidifying his status as the most decorated player in the history of the sport.

In 2025, he also clinched the MLS Golden Boot, scoring 43 goals across all competitions. Recently, he committed to a new contract that extends through 2028, indicating the promise of further trophy-collecting exploits ahead.

Messi has emerged as the main attraction in American soccer, consistently demonstrating exceptional performance during his two full seasons in the United States. Despite being 38 years old, there is every reason to believe that his remarkable standards will be sustained well into his 40s.

Former MLS striker Earnshaw echoes this optimism. While discussing Messi’s potential for annual MVP awards, he stated, “As long as he is playing at the level he is playing at, absolutely. It’s easy to underestimate players as they reach late-career stages, but Messi is truly extraordinary.”

He elaborated, noting Messi’s unique ability to maintain his dribbling, passing, and goal-scoring prowess, even against much younger opponents: “We are still witnessing his incredible dribbling and precise passing, something that is rare for players of his age.”

Earnshaw also acknowledged the unique physical challenges of American soccer, which differ from those in Europe, yet Messi continues to excel and remain the standout player on the pitch. “For as long as he maintains this level, he will keep winning the MVP award. He is not just the MVP of Inter Miami; he elevates the entire league.”

“Without Messi, Inter Miami wouldn’t have clinched their first title, nor would they have garnered the same level of attention and aura that the club currently enjoys. He is, and will continue to be, the MVP.”

Currently, Inter Miami is navigating their pre-season program ahead of the 2026 MLS campaign, with Messi and his teammates embarking on a tour of South America. Coach Javier Mascherano hopes his side will start strong as competitive action resumes while preparing to transition to their new home at Freedom Park.

As Messi aims for a third consecutive MVP award, he is also contemplating his participation in the upcoming World Cup, with expectations high for him to contribute to Argentina’s title defense.
