Messi s Future in International Football A Look Ahead to 2026Messi s Future in International Football A Look Ahead to 2026

Lionel Messi concluded his illustrious career with a triumphant victory in Qatar as Argentina clinched the 2022 World Cup. Now, he is contemplating his participation in what could be his final international tournament in 2026. Currently playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, Messi continues to showcase his remarkable talent, and former Argentina teammate Javier Zanetti is certain that Messi can once again guide his nation to glory.

Zanetti expressed his views to FourFourTwo, stating, “That has to be his decision, but I believe he will participate. With only a few months remaining, I think he also wishes to represent his country again. I have no doubt it will happen.”

He further dismissed any concerns about Messi’s age, asserting, “I don’t agree with that notion. Messi is entirely capable of continuing as a leader. He possesses tremendous intelligence, understands the team’s needs better than anyone, and is surrounded by exceptional players in the national team. I am convinced that with him, Argentina will be a strong contender again at the next World Cup.”

When asked if Messi might extend his career beyond the World Cup, Zanetti remarked, “I don’t know if that can be determined in the short term, but I believe it is time for Messi to enjoy football. What matters most now is that he finds joy in what he does. The World Cup will undoubtedly serve as an important testing ground for him, after which he can decide calmly whether to continue.”

Speaking to ESPN earlier in December, Messi remained non-committal when discussing his participation in the 2026 tournament. He remarked, “I hope to be there. I’ve stated before that I’d love to participate. If not, I will certainly be watching it live, which would be special. The World Cup holds significance for everyone, particularly for us, as we experience it in a unique way.”

He continued, “The truth is that we have extraordinary players, and this has been evident for years—especially the motivation and enthusiasm since [Lionel] Scaloni took over. The mentality within the team is exceptional; it is filled with winners who possess a strong desire to succeed, and that mentality is infectious. You witness it during training and matches. Everyone gives their all, which is a tremendous strength for our group and national team. This environment is cultivated by Scaloni and his staff.

“New talent continues to emerge; in addition to the established players, fresh faces are joining the mix. When a team functions like this, it becomes easier for newcomers to integrate. Argentina must capitalize on this moment. Winning the World Cup gives us the confidence and freedom to prepare for competitions in a different manner.”

Messi will turn 39 during the 2026 World Cup. His team is set to face Spain on March 27 in the Finalissima, followed by matches against Algeria, Austria, and Jordan in Group J of the World Cup. Their first match in the prestigious tournament is scheduled for June 17, just a week before Messi’s birthday. Could there be a more fitting present than lifting the trophy for a second time?
