Messi s Uncertain World Cup Future Amidst PreparationsMessi s Uncertain World Cup Future Amidst Preparations

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi, has yet to confirm his participation in the upcoming World Cup. Currently, he is playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he is expected to be a key figure in another significant tournament hosted on North American soil.

Messi shared his thoughts on the World Cup, stating, “I hope I can be there. I’ve said before that I’d love to be present. At the very least, I’ll be watching it live, which will be special. The World Cup holds a unique significance for everyone, especially for us, as we experience it in a completely different way.”

In discussions with Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, Messi noted, “The truth is we’ve been talking about it. He understands, and we’ve had extensive discussions. He always tells me that he would like me to be there in any capacity. We share a strong bond of trust, allowing us to address everything openly.”

Scaloni has engaged in further conversations with his star captain. During the MLS off-season, Messi has returned to Argentina, enjoying time with his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and their three children.

Scaloni commented on their recent meeting, stating, “I met up with Leo because we were nearby. We had coffee together. Those who know him recognize that he is a natural competitor who always wants to be involved. This attitude is crucial for his teammates; it sets a standard for future captains. He consistently shows up to play, which is a legacy that those who follow him must uphold.”

When asked about the topic of international selection, Scaloni replied, “We didn’t discuss the World Cup. There’s still time, and we shouldn’t pressure him. We must allow him to take his time.”

Scaloni mentioned having a preliminary list of approximately 50 players, which will be narrowed down in the coming months. He remarked, “During the last World Cup, we faced the challenge of player injuries occurring close to the event. Therefore, we cannot eliminate anyone at this stage; a larger list is essential.”

One player under consideration is Thiago Almada, who has been viewed as a potential successor to Messi in the No. 10 role. However, he has faced challenges at Atletico Madrid since his transfer in the summer of 2025. Scaloni stated regarding Almada, “We should not interfere in his decisions. Once he makes his choice, we will analyze his performance and assess whether he meets the level we expect. He remains an important player for us, and ultimately, performance will dictate our decisions, not the league or team he plays for.”

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, Scaloni anticipates that his squad will resemble the one that triumphed in Qatar. He emphasized that there are no current reasons for change, as the reigning champions have earned the opportunity to compete again. He added, “It is vital for them to be in peak condition as the tournament approaches. While it may not be pointless to prepare now, the critical phase will begin in March; they will need a stroke of luck to arrive at their best.”

Argentina has been placed in Group J for the 2026 World Cup. They will commence their campaign for another major title on June 26 in Kansas City, facing Algeria, followed by matches against Austria and Jordan.
