Midfielder Cooney Cross Returns to Australia Amid Mother s Cancer DiagnosisMidfielder Cooney Cross Returns to Australia Amid Mother s Cancer Diagnosis

Arsenal midfielder Cooney-Cross has traveled back to Australia to be with her family following the announcement of her mother’s diagnosis with Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of bile duct cancer.

The news was shared through a statement from the Cooney-Cross family, along with a heartfelt post on the player’s Instagram account. The family described the diagnosis as a “huge shock,” as they grapple with the implications of this incurable condition.

Due to this compassionate leave, Cooney-Cross will not participate in Arsenal’s Women’s Super League match against Manchester United this weekend. The club has committed to providing her with the necessary time to be with her family during this challenging period.

In an emotional social media post, Cooney-Cross paid tribute to her mother, whom she referred to as the cornerstone of her successful career with both Arsenal and the Matildas. “A few days ago, our world changed forever,” she wrote. “My amazing mum, Jess, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma. It’s a rare and aggressive cancer, and there is no cure.”

Cooney-Cross expressed her deep admiration for her mother, stating, “My mum is my hero, my best friend, my everything. She has shaped every part of who I am and has been my greatest supporter. Trying to articulate what she means to me feels impossible.”

Having joined Arsenal from Hammarby in 2023, Cooney-Cross acknowledged the family’s difficulty in processing such sudden news. “I’m now back in Australia to be with my mum, my sisters, and our family as we navigate what comes next. We are all still in shock and learning to cope with the weight of this news.”

The diagnosis has created significant emotional and financial strain on the family. A statement from them highlighted the practical challenges they face while caring for Jess, noting the financial pressure on the family.

“The news has brought immense financial stress on Jess, Andy, and the entire family,” the statement read. “We have established a GoFundMe page to raise essential support during this time, and any contribution would be greatly appreciated.”

The family has requested privacy as they maneuver through the upcoming difficult months and clarified that they will not be providing further comments at this time.

Cooney-Cross has been a prominent player for the Matildas and is increasingly recognized in the Women’s Super League. Her return to Australia marks a temporary departure from football as she focuses on supporting the woman she credits for her accomplishments.

“Any support, whether through donations or sharing our story, is deeply appreciated,” she added.

Cooney-Cross has been instrumental in Arsenal’s midfield, recently earning the club’s Player of the Month award for December. Her absence will undoubtedly be felt on the pitch during the upcoming clash against United this Saturday. Nevertheless, the club and the broader football community have emphasized that football is secondary, rallying around the young star to provide their full support.

Additionally, Cooney-Cross may miss the forthcoming Asian Cup in Australia, which is set to commence in March.
