Mikel Arteta Advocates for Expanded Matchday Squads in Premier League

omidbasir- Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has publicly urged the Premier League to reconsider its regulations regarding matchday squads, advocating for an increase in the number of players allowed from 18 to 20 starting next season.

Current rules permit only 18 players to be named for each match, which is two fewer than in UEFA competitions. Arteta’s call for change aligns with sentiments expressed by Liverpool manager Arne Slot and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, both of whom are also advocating for expanded squad sizes.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming match against Leeds United, Arteta remarked, “At the moment, there are two or three players who must be excluded from the squad. Unfortunately, these are the rules, but I hope that the Premier League will allow 20 outfield players next season, similar to what is implemented in the Champions League. This adjustment would significantly enhance our ability to manage the squad effectively, preserving player value and promoting their mental well-being. No one wishes to be omitted from the squad.

“I implore the league to consider this change. We can manage logistics like hotels and travel, which would be tremendously beneficial for everyone involved, particularly when it comes to the difficult decision of leaving someone out. However, it’s essential to maintain balance in the positions, ensuring that certain areas aren’t overloaded while others are left vulnerable. The selection process involves evaluating how each player trains, behaves, and contributes to the team. Every player should ideally have a role in each match.”

When asked about the implications of exclusion on a player’s mental health, Arteta explained, “Our profession is unique as we have the power to transform lives and careers. However, each week we must inform someone that they will not participate in the match. Imagine another profession where you have to tell two colleagues they cannot perform their duties for the day. It is incredibly challenging.

“Players who wish to feel integrated into the team must travel with us, participate, and feel they have a chance. When that opportunity is taken away, they may feel inadequate, as if they are being overlooked. Ultimately, the decision reflects a choice of 20 other players over them, which is both avoidable and concerning. Given the increasing demands of the game, our squads need to expand. Restricting this does not seem logical to me. We should strive to include everyone and make informed decisions regarding gameplay. This would improve our management of player minutes, psychological states, and emotional well-being, benefiting the entire group.”

Arteta has previously suggested that Premier League clubs should be permitted to register more than 25 senior players in their squads to enhance competition and player management.
