Per Football.London, Mikel Merino has undergone surgery for a foot injury sustained during a match against Manchester United. The 29-year-old midfielder now faces a race against time to return before the conclusion of the current season. He has contributed notably with four goals and three assists this season but will be unable to put significant weight on the affected foot for the next eight weeks. Despite this setback, there is optimism that he may return in time for Arsenal’s title campaign.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed hope regarding Merino’s potential return: “We hope so. I don’t know. Obviously, he needs to go through a procedure, which is not always a positive sign. He is a significant player for us with his versatility and ability to compete in various positions. This is indeed a considerable blow.”

Merino has suffered a foot fracture, and Arteta noted that the nature of the injury is quite rare. He stated, “Let’s see. It’s a very rare injury, so we have to wait and see how it reacts after the surgery. We will monitor it closely in the days following the operation. I know Mikel will do everything possible to return quickly, but he must also respect the healing process, given the unusual nature of the injury.”

The midfielder also aims to recover in time to represent Spain in the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

This injury is a significant setback for a player who was thriving during his team’s impressive form earlier this season. He previously remarked, “Football is not solely about results. It is the main thing, but the joy of playing alongside these teammates enhances the experience, making every moment on the pitch enjoyable. Everyone is giving their best, and that mix of performance and enjoyment is the magic recipe. I am very happy.”

Originally signed as a midfielder, Merino has emerged as an invaluable option for Arsenal’s attacking front, impressing Arteta with his adaptability. Arteta mentioned, “As a striker, this was not something he ever envisioned, but that’s the beauty of discovering a player’s capabilities—Mikel has a profound curiosity and passion for the game, which makes it challenging to set limits on his potential.”

Currently, Arsenal sits six points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. However, the squad is also coping with injuries to key players like Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.

In their upcoming fixture, Arsenal faces Brentford in a challenging away match. The Bees rank seventh in the league and are just five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, with aspirations for Champions League qualification. Following this match, Arsenal will shift focus to the FA Cup, where they will compete against Wigan Athletic in the fourth round.
