Mikel Oyarzabal expresses great happiness regarding Real Sociedad’s resurgence in 2026, noting a marked improvement in their league standings. He believes the previous situation was unsatisfactory due to players not performing to their potential, which ultimately led to Sergio’s dismissal. In his interview with Radio MARCA Donostia, the captain highlights the positive impact of Pellegrino Matarazzo’s arrival and stresses that he is not overly concerned about making history with the txuriurdin.

Oyarzabal first celebrates how Real Sociedad appears significantly transformed in 2026 compared to their performance at Christmas. “I believe the change has been beneficial; things are going well, and everyone seems to have reconnected with the energy we exhibited in previous years. We are on the right path, but it is crucial to maintain this momentum because pausing here would render our efforts pointless.”

The captain has also evaluated the change in management, stating, “When you switch coaches mid-season, everyone experiences a shift—those playing and those not playing—because they see an opportunity to improve and secure playing time. While it might seem easier to change the coach rather than 25 players, we must reflect on ourselves, as some have not performed up to their abilities.”

Discussing Matarazzo, Oyarzabal describes him as an intelligent individual who shares a similar understanding of the game and pays attention to detail. “What struck me was his stature; upon first meeting him, it’s quite noticeable. I appreciate his approach to pressing high, focusing on direct engagement, and striving to take charge, even without the ball.”

The victories against Osasuna and Barcelona have proven invaluable for the necessary turnaround. “Indeed, various factors play a role, such as equalizing in injury time after a poor start, forcing extra time, and eventually winning on penalties, especially with Marrero stepping up after a long absence from the spotlight. It was a day filled with energy and joy, and I believe it set the tone for our next match.”

Oyarzabal recalls critical moments from the matches, including a penalty miss in extra time and his choice to avert his gaze during the decisive penalty shootout. “I don’t dwell on the miss too much. When it comes to penalties, I prefer not to watch them. It makes me exceedingly nervous, so I’ve always opted to turn away.”

Now that the team is performing better, Oyarzabal has acknowledged the contributions of those who have seen less playtime. “Marrero exemplifies what can happen in training when players have to wait for their chance. Despite having spent years without much play, he has shown he is ready to step up in challenging situations. Other players, like Aihen, Pablo Marín, Goti, and Elustondo, who have been here for many years, also deserve recognition, as they face the difficulty of not getting game time.”

Unfortunately, Orri Óskarsson and Yangel Herrera have not played due to injuries. “I’ve always maintained that Orri is a player who will greatly benefit us; he possesses incredible potential but has faced challenges since joining at a young age. He understands the situation is tough but is capable of making significant contributions. Similarly, Yangel is gradually regaining his rhythm and will be a valuable asset given his physical qualities.”

Reflecting on his own career, Oyarzabal recently celebrated reaching 416 appearances, placing him among the club’s legends. “I am very happy and proud of what has transpired. I never imagined I would achieve this. Although it is an honor, I hope to reach even greater heights. I appreciate playing, regardless of the coach in charge. As for catching up to Gorriz’s 599 appearances, I’m not fixated on that. Life is unpredictable, but I’m content here and will strive until my last day. Regarding my contract, there are no negotiations or discussions, as I still have two and a half years left.”

Oyarzabal emphasizes his unwavering passion for being a part of Real Sociedad. “It’s natural to have days when you feel overwhelmed or lose focus, but fortunately, those days are rare. Spending time with my son in the afternoons allows me to disconnect from football and prioritize what truly matters; while football is important, it ranks as the most crucial of the less important things. Should I ever find myself as a substitute, I would view it positively, acknowledging that another player is performing well and achieving results for the club.”
