Minnesota United is in the final stages of negotiations to secure Colombian international forward James Rodríguez, as confirmed by sources to ESPN.

If the deal is finalized, Rodríguez would not occupy a designated player spot, with the agreement set to last at least through this summer’s World Cup.

At 34 years old, Rodríguez has been a free agent since December following the expiration of his contract with Liga MX club León. This move is critical for him to maintain his competitive edge ahead of the World Cup.

Under new manager Cameron Knowles, Minnesota aims to adopt a more expansive style of play, and Rodríguez’s creativity would significantly contribute to this strategy. Additionally, his proficiency in set pieces would bolster an area that was a strength for Minnesota last season.

The conclusion of his tenure with León marks yet another chapter in Rodríguez’s tumultuous club career. Since a two-year loan from 2017 to 2019 with Bayern Munich, he has played for several clubs, including Everton, Al Rayyan, Olympiacos, São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano, and León. Last season, Rodríguez registered three goals and two assists in 14 appearances for León.

On the international stage, Rodríguez continues to excel. He was awarded the Golden Ball at the 2024 Copa América, contributing one goal and six assists while guiding Colombia to the final, where they narrowly lost to Argentina, 1-0.

Overall, Rodríguez has made 122 appearances for Colombia, scoring 31 goals, and he is expected to be a key attacking force for his nation at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Notably, he previously secured the Golden Boot at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, scoring six goals and providing two assists during Colombia’s journey to the quarterfinals.

Rodríguez began his professional career with Envigado in Colombia before moving to Argentine club Banfield in 2008. He has since represented some of the world’s most prestigious clubs, including Porto, AS Monaco, and Real Madrid.

The Athletic was the first to report the advanced discussions between Rodríguez and Minnesota United.
