Morocco Edges Out United States in Thrilling Penalty Shootout 1Morocco Edges Out United States in Thrilling Penalty Shootout 1

The United States appeared to have the upper hand after Jude Terry’s expertly executed goal in the 21st minute, which provided them with a well-deserved lead. The Philadelphia Union academy product finished with precision, capitalizing on a well-timed pass from Cavan Sullivan, thus continuing his impressive performance in the tournament. The Americans managed to maintain their advantage for a significant portion of the match, generating multiple chances to extend their lead while effectively stifling Morocco’s attacking efforts.

However, the match took an unexpected turn in the 74th minute when the United States was awarded a penalty kick that could have secured their progression. Mathis Albert, who had been instrumental throughout the tournament, stepped up to take the crucial spot kick but was thwarted by a remarkable save.

In the subsequent penalty shootout, both teams showed signs of nerves amid the high-stakes environment. Morocco’s Ahmed Mouhoub misfired on his attempt, temporarily granting the Americans an edge. Unfortunately, the United States was unable to capitalize on this advantage, as both Maximo Carrizo and Cooper Sanchez failed to convert their penalties. This allowed Morocco to clinch a 4-3 victory in the shootout, propelling them into the Round of 16.

This outcome marks a significant disappointment for coach Gonzalo Segares and his squad, who had exhibited considerable potential throughout the tournament. The U.S. team, featuring promising talents like Sullivan, Terry, and Nimfasha Berchimas, had garnered attention for their tactical discipline and attacking prowess during the group stage, where they conceded only one goal while scoring four.

Furthermore, this defeat signifies the third consecutive elimination for the U.S. in youth tournaments at the hands of Morocco. The U.S. had previously faced setbacks in the Olympics against les Lions de l’Atlas in 2024, followed by another loss to the Morocco U20s during the U20 World Cup earlier this year.

With this victory, Morocco advances to face Japan in the Round of 16, continuing their impressive resurgence following a challenging group stage. Despite finishing third in Group B behind Japan and Portugal, they qualified for the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams, even after suffering two defeats in their three group matches.
