At his opening press conference for the November international break, Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann elaborated on the decision to include Leroy Sané in the national team. Following the squad announcement last Thursday, the return of Sané raised eyebrows, particularly as he is currently playing for Galatasaray in Turkey. Regarding his selection, Nagelsmann stated, “He still hasn’t met the performance levels I expect from him. It would have been a more challenging decision if we had 6-7 players with similar attributes. I had a productive discussion with Leroy, where I made my expectations clear. He understands that his opportunities to prove himself are limited. I conveyed this to him directly. He possesses the ability to excel in various aspects of the game; he simply needs to fully commit and deliver. He has shown improvement in his Champions League and Süper Lig performances, but there is still room for growth.” Since joining Galatasaray on a free transfer this summer, the 29-year-old has participated in 15 matches, contributing three goals and three assists. Sané’s inclusion in the squad has resulted in the exclusion of several other players, notably Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller and Maximilian Mittelstädt. Their omission is particularly surprising given their strong individual performances and Stuttgart’s form in the early stages of the season.
