Napoli’s challenges persisted over the weekend as they recorded their fifth loss in all competitions this season, placing them two points behind league leaders Inter and Roma.

The team’s recent performances have been lackluster, marked by two defeats in their last five league matches and a concerning absence of attacking prowess. The reigning champions have not scored in their last three games across all competitions, raising significant concerns about their creativity and finishing capabilities.

This mounting pressure has prompted coach Antonio Conte to emphasize the need for accountability within the club. He stated, “Everyone has to take responsibility. I’m the first to be held accountable. Heart transplants aren’t an option. Each of us needs to rediscover our spirit and our grit. I’m disappointed because I’m not finding the energy in the guys again; it means I’m not doing a good job.”

Conte signaled his intention to engage in discussions with club officials regarding both his future and that of the team, aiming to prevent a recurrence of the previous season, when Napoli finished 10th just a year after winning the Scudetto. He remarked, “We must never forget that in Naples, after a Scudetto, we finished 10th. I’m sorry to have to dig up the bones of the past. I’ll talk to the club, who already knew what I thought.”

In a post on social media platform X, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis addressed speculation surrounding Conte’s potential resignation, stating, “I came across the fairy tale of Conte’s resignation on the web. I love social media a lot because they’re a contemporary and fast way to spread thoughts. But you know that thoughts aren’t always right or shareable.”

He continued, “Between me and Conte, there has always existed a special harmony that unites men who embody the 3 ‘C’s [Character, Competence, and Courage], which resonate deeply with Neapolitans and beyond. To the fans who’ve read some nonsense, I say: I’m proud to have by my side, and alongside Napoli and the players, a real man like Antonio Conte, capable of sacrificing every second of his life for his profession, with extreme generosity and dedication. This is the most important guarantee that can be given today to a club, the players, and the demanding fans like those of Napoli.”

Conte took the helm at Napoli at the beginning of the 2024-25 season, tasked with stabilizing the club after a disappointing campaign that had left it in disarray. His tenure commenced with a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Hellas Verona, but Conte quickly adjusted, moving away from his traditional 3-5-2 formation to implement a 4-3-3 system that better aligned with Napoli’s attacking strengths. This tactical shift yielded impressive results, culminating in Napoli securing the Scudetto on the final matchday with a crucial victory over Cagliari. One of Conte’s most astute decisions was the signing of Scott McTominay from Manchester United, who excelled under his management and was named Serie A’s MVP in his debut season.

Currently, competing in both Serie A and the Champions League, Conte’s squad has struggled to navigate the increased demands. The absence of star striker Romelu Lukaku due to a long-term injury at the season’s onset has been compounded by the sidelining of playmaker Kevin De Bruyne. Recent draws against Como and Eintracht Frankfurt, followed by a defeat to Bologna, have left the Italian champions in a precarious position in both competitions.

Napoli and De Laurentiis will seek to persuade Conte to remain at the club, relying on his expertise and extensive knowledge to guide the team out of their current poor form in the absence of key players Lukaku and De Bruyne.
