Neymar s World Cup Aspirations Amid Fitness ConcernsNeymar s World Cup Aspirations Amid Fitness Concerns

As Neymar approaches his 34th birthday this February, uncertainty looms over his participation in another major international tournament. With 128 caps and a remarkable 79 goals for Brazil, he is currently grappling with persistent fitness issues that are proving difficult to overcome.

Earlier in 2025, Neymar made a return to his roots by rejoining Santos. However, he underwent knee surgery at the conclusion of the last domestic season in Brazil, and has not represented his country since suffering an ACL injury in October 2023.

When asked about Neymar’s potential role in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for this summer’s World Cup, former Brazil international Kleberson expressed his desire to see Neymar on the field. Speaking to GOAL in association with ToonieBet, he remarked, “I genuinely want to see Neymar at the World Cup. Currently, he is lagging in fitness compared to others due to injuries and limited playtime over the past year.

“The talent he possesses is undeniable. Once he regains his fitness and gets back into form, he can significantly contribute. While he may not arrive at the World Cup at peak fitness, given the current format, he can still perform exceptionally well because he remains the most talented player we have in Brazil. Other players are performing admirably, but none possess the unique skills that Neymar showcases.

“He must attain a good fitness level, accumulate playing time, and remain on the pitch. Among all Brazilian talents, no one replicates what he can do. While we might mention Vini Junior or Raphinha or Estevao, Neymar’s capabilities with the ball are unparalleled. He is the closest I have seen to Ronaldinho.”

Brazil has sought inspiration from Neymar for over a decade, and as he nears international retirement, the question arises: who will fill his shoes? Kleberson suggests that Estevao may take on this role over Vini Junior, stating, “While Vini is undeniably talented, Estevao’s technical comfort and ball control set him apart. Vini is the speedster on the wings, but Estevao exhibits more flair and agility in his movements.

“Transitioning to the Premier League would be a tremendous opportunity for Estevao. Being part of a prestigious club like Chelsea, alongside seasoned players, would facilitate significant growth for him. The World Cup could serve as a platform for him to showcase his talents.”

As Neymar edges closer to retirement from international football, discussions about his legacy within Brazil’s all-time rankings intensify. Without a Ballon d’Or or a World Cup victory to his name, Kleberson acknowledges that these omissions may hinder his placement among the elite.

Reflecting on his contemporaries like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Pele, Rivaldo, and Kaka, he remarked, “It’s challenging to place Neymar alongside those legends. He is undoubtedly a top-tier player and has shone at clubs like Barcelona and Santos. However, should he remain without a World Cup title, he risks being remembered similarly to Zico—a celebrated figure, admired and respected, yet lacking the ultimate accolade. He could end his career in that shadow.”

To solidify his legacy and join the ranks of his iconic compatriots, Neymar must demonstrate his value to Ancelotti before the final selection for the World Cup heading to North America.
