Niclas Füllkrug’s Loan Move to AC Milan: A Last Chance for Glory

Niclas Füllkrug is hopeful that his loan transfer from West Ham to AC Milan will rejuvenate the impressive form that previously saw him lead the line for the German national team.

The forward has joined the Serie A club on a six-month loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy set at approximately €5 million.

At 32 years old, this appears to be Füllkrug’s final opportunity to play for a prominent club in one of Europe’s elite leagues. Moreover, this summer’s World Cup may be his last chance to participate in a major international tournament with Die Mannschaft.

Füllkrug transitioned to West Ham from Borussia Dortmund for €27 million in 2024, following a successful season where he netted 12 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances. He also represented Germany during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where, despite the team’s disappointing performance, Füllkrug emerged as one of the few players whose reputation improved, thanks to his solid performances and scoring record.

Since his debut for Germany in 2022, Füllkrug has recorded an impressive 14 goals in 24 matches, marking a remarkable contribution to the national team.

While he may not be the youngest striker available to Germany, Füllkrug offers a distinctive skill set. His physical strength allows him to hold up the ball effectively, facilitating play for other attackers. Given Germany’s array of speedy wingers and a world-class playmaker in Jamal Musiala, Füllkrug’s ability to link play could provide the national team with greater stability in the attacking third.

During the qualification phase for this year’s World Cup, Germany’s performance was below par for much of the campaign. Füllkrug’s ability to engage with teammates and enhance attacking maneuvers could prove invaluable in controlling offensive phases.

Furthermore, Germany currently lacks a striker with Füllkrug’s profile. While Maximilian Beier, Nick Woltemade, and Jonathan Burkardt are likely candidates for the squad heading to North America, none replicate Füllkrug’s unique attributes.

Except for Woltemade, who can also hold the ball up, the Newcastle forward tends to drop deep and dribble, a rare trait for someone of his stature.

Ultimately, it will be up to Füllkrug to demonstrate his value to coach Julian Nagelsmann in the upcoming months as preparations for the World Cup unfold. If he succeeds, bringing the seasoned forward into the squad could provide Germany with crucial additional options during the tournament.
