Nico and Selton Shine in Athletic Bilbao’s Victory Over Oviedo

In the recent match against Oviedo, Nico and Selton emerged as key players, delighting the fans at San Mamés. The crowd was eager to see their star player and a promising young midfielder from the academy, who made his debut as a lion just days earlier against Newcastle.

Nico expressed that scoring the goal provided him with renewed motivation to continue his efforts, especially given the challenges posed by his pubalgia.

“There are times when you contemplate giving up due to the difficulties of this condition. There are days when it’s hard to even get out of bed. The peak of my injury came last season during a match against Manchester, but I am feeling better now. I am currently undergoing double training sessions in the afternoons. This injury has been a growth opportunity for me, both as a footballer and as an individual, as I can be quite impatient at times,” he said.

He emphasized that surgery is not part of his immediate plans, noting, “The progress from conservative treatment is evident, and surgery does not guarantee recovery in two months. It’s essential to approach this matter with caution. I have complete confidence in the training plan we are implementing. One must not dwell on the future; rather, it’s vital to focus on the present. While I aspire to participate in the World Cup, my priority is to perform well for Athletic.”

The winger remarked, “We are very pleased with the three points. We really needed them. We approached the match with great enthusiasm. I’m not entirely sure how I managed to score; I just pushed forward and was fortunate.”

Nico also praised his young teammate Selton, stating, “He is quite fearless and has impressed me with his ability to take on defenders since he joined our training sessions.”

Selton also made a significant impact, marking his first appearance at San Mamés as a starter. “I’m sure someone in my family shed a tear,” the 18-year-old midfielder said. He acknowledged the support he has received from his teammates, adding, “Since stepping up to the first team, everyone has treated me very well, and I feel very welcomed. I need to keep working hard daily because I still have a lot to learn to secure more playing time.”
