Nicol s Fonseca Joins Oviedo on Loan from Club Le nNicol s Fonseca Joins Oviedo on Loan from Club Le n

Nicolás Fonseca has officially joined Oviedo as a new player. The Uruguayan midfielder has arrived at Carlos Tartiere on loan from Club León until the end of the season, with a clear mission: to provide strength and balance to a midfield that has shown vulnerabilities.

However, his registration is currently on hold. With all 25 player slots filled, the club needs to finalize at least one outgoing transfer to facilitate his activation. Despite this, Fonseca will be present this Sunday at El Requexón to start training under Guillermo Almada and to integrate into the team as quickly as possible.

At 28 years old, the midfielder is a personal choice of Rafael Monge, advisor to the president of the Pachuca Group, Jesús Martínez, and he arrives with high ambitions. His immediate goal is to help Oviedo secure its place in the league, while he also aspires to impress Marcelo Bielsa and earn a spot on the Uruguay national team for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The son of the legendary Daniel Fonseca, Nicolás was born in Italy, a significant detail that allows him to occupy a community player position. He developed his skills at Novara, played for River Plate in Uruguay and Wanderers, and made a move to Argentina to join River Plate before the Pachuca Group brought him in to strengthen Club León. In the last Mexican Apertura tournament, he was an important contributor: appearing in 15 matches, logging 1,135 minutes, and receiving five yellow cards.

Last summer, he was very close to joining Valencia, but issues with the salary cap halted the transfer. Now, Oviedo is seizing the opportunity. The club is optimistic that they can finalize an outgoing transfer soon, enabling him to make his debut on January 4 against Alavés at Mendizorroza (18:30). Moldovan and Brandon Domingues are the most advanced candidates for departure, although they are not the only ones.

Fonseca represents only the first strategic move for the club. They continue to explore the transfer market and maintain interest in striker Giorgios Giakoumakis, who is currently on loan from Cruz Azul to PAOK. This situation is complex, as the Greek player is essential for a team competing for the title and has scored nine goals in 20 matches. However, direct discussions in Mexico could potentially open a new avenue.
