Nigerian Coach Accuses DR Congo of Voodoo Amid World Cup Qualification SetbackNigerian Coach Accuses DR Congo of Voodoo Amid World Cup Qualification Setback

Nigeria’s head coach, Éric Chelle, has made a controversial allegation against the DR Congo team, claiming they engaged in “voodoo” practices during the penalty shootout that ultimately eliminated Nigeria from qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

In a critical qualifier, Nigeria initially took the lead with a goal from Frank Onyeka. However, Meschack Elia’s equalizer sent the match into a penalty shootout, where DR Congo triumphed 4-3, thereby keeping their World Cup aspirations alive.

In his post-match comments, Chelle expressed his frustration, stating, “During all the penalty decisions, the player from Congo performed some sort of voodoo. Every single time… This is why I was a bit anxious after him,” he told reporters.

When pressed for clarification, Chelle gestured with his right arm but refrained from providing specific details regarding his claims, simply indicating that there might have been some form of ritual involved.

This defeat, particularly against a team ranked 19 spots below Nigeria, marks the third consecutive World Cup that Nigeria will miss since 2006, raising questions about whether the nation has squandered its promising footballing talent.

In response to the disappointing outcome, the Nigeria Football Federation released an official statement expressing their regret to fans and the President of Nigeria.

“The Nigeria Football Federation wishes to openly and sincerely apologize to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and the millions of Nigerians, especially our devoted football supporters, following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals,” the statement read on X.

“Sunday’s loss to DR Congo in the Africa Play-off Final in Rabat represents a moment of profound sadness for Nigerian football. For a nation where the Super Eagles are a symbol of unity, hope, and shared pride, failing to secure a World Cup spot for the second consecutive time is a significant disappointment.

“The NFF, along with the technical staff and players, fully comprehend the gravity of this moment. We recognize the expectations of the Nigerian populace and the passion with which they support their team, regardless of the circumstances. We acknowledge that our collective efforts fell short of delivering the result this nation rightfully deserved.”
