Ongoing Transfer Negotiations for Norwich’s Josh Sargent

Negotiations for Josh Sargent’s potential transfer to Toronto FC are currently ongoing, with no agreement reached as of yet. Despite resistance from the English Championship side, Toronto remains optimistic about finalizing the deal.

Philippe Clement, the head coach of Norwich, publicly addressed the matter following his team’s 5–1 FA Cup victory over Walsall. He disclosed that Sargent had made himself unavailable for the match due to transfer-related concerns, not due to injury.

“He sent me a message indicating he was unavailable today because of transfer issues weighing on his mind,” Clement stated. “This is obviously not the situation we desire, and it will have consequences. We need to discuss this internally within the club this week.”

Fabrizio Romano and ESPN have reported on Toronto’s bid for Sargent, though Toronto FC declined to comment when approached by GOAL. Clement reiterated the club’s firm stance, confirming that they do not intend to sell the 25-year-old during this transfer window.

“The club’s position has been clear,” Clement affirmed. “Josh and his agent are aware of the situation. He will not be leaving in this transfer window.”

Sargent remains a vital player for Norwich, having scored eight goals and provided three assists in 24 appearances this season. Since joining from Werder Bremen in 2021, he has participated in 157 matches for the Canaries, netting 56 goals and contributing 15 assists across all competitions.

The timing of this potential transfer adds further complexity, especially with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. Sargent is vying for a position under U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Despite his solid performance at the club level, he has struggled to replicate that success with the national team, making only two appearances.

Having started his career with the German club Werder Bremen, Sargent has yet to play in Major League Soccer (MLS). Regardless of whether the transfer proceeds, the current situation has introduced uncertainty into what is a crucial year for one of the United States’ most established forwards.
